The first Ultralase clinic was opened in January 1991 at the Clatterbridge Hospital near Chester. At the time, all treatments performed were Photorefractive Keratotomy, or PRK, until the Lasik procedure was introduced in 1995.
With the introduction of Lasik, and the clear advantages it demonstrated for certain patients, Ultralase went through a period of dramatic growth through 2002.
2003 Ultralase introduced the revolutionary UltraPlus treatment with Wavefront technology, giving patients visual outcomes far surpassing those of standard laser treatments. Ultralase became the first provider to have all treatment outcomes verified by independent audit.
In March 2009, the commitment to clinical excellence led Ultralase to become the first UK provider to have all Great Britain surgeons certified in Laser Refractive Surgery by the Royal College of Ophthalmologists (RCOphth).
Ultralase Prices
Ultralase comes in second place in our list of the best laser eye surgery clinics in the UK for price, just after Optical Express. That’s because this clinic offers the full shebang: transparent prices, 0% finance options, free consultations, and competitive prices.
The cost of eye surgery at Ultralase ranges between £1,1695 and £2,995 (per eye), depending on the treatment type that you agree upon in discussion with a surgeon. These prices are in line with the average cost of eye surgery, but not quite as low as Optical Express.
Treatments Offered
You can count on Ultralase for the main laser eye and lens replacement surgery procedures. These include: LASIK and LASEK with Wavefront options, as well as refractive lens exchange (RLE), implantable contact lenses, and cataract surgery.
Is Ultralase Right for You?
With nearly 3,000 overall positive reviews from independent customers in the UK, Ultralase is one of the best-rated laser eye surgery clinics by patients. People value this clinic for its:
- Friendly prices – Fixed and reasonable prices help you know what to expect.
- Nationwide clinics – Ultralase has 20 clinics in the UK, including in London, Reading and St Albans.
- Decent aftercare – Ultralase provides free aftercare – one check-up and drops for the first three months.
Despite glowing reviews, however, it’s worth reading the fine print if you do choose Ultralase. In 2015, BBC’s Watchdog exposed the problems countless laser eye surgery patients have experienced accessing their lifelong aftercare.
Most user reviews on Lasik Eyes show happy experiences, but then again most people never need to take advantage of their lifetime guarantee. If you would like to find out whether Ultralase is the top-rated laser eye surgery clinic near you, we’re here to help.

Nearly 3 weeks after treatment - Don't anybody pinch me - it's a dream and i don't want to wake up!! No glare, no halo's no dry eyes, noting but good clear eyes. I'm still amazed how hgealthy my eyes look, the whites seem to be whiter than they were.(perhaps the drops have a lasting effect - it wasn't contact lens irritation as i'd stopped wearng them months before treatment) Well worth the money and i wis i'd done it years ago. thanks Ultralase and i'll see you at my monthly check.next week !

I had lasik surgery at 10am Saturday 18.10.03 at St. Albans and do not regret it for one moment. I was a little worried they wouldn't perform the surgery as i had (and stilll have) a heavy nasal cold, but this was not a problem. The results are absolutely amazing. Still can't believe i did it though! I'm still in shock with the results and go around acting like a child with a new toy, but i've got new eyes instead. I wore glasses and soft contact lenses for 22 years and walked out of the clinic with fantastic vision just an hour after the surgery. Ok my vision was hazy, but i was still amazed. Light sensitivity was the only minor problem, just kept my eyes closed as much as poss. and kept sunglasses on until about 3pm. By 4pm i was out about and not experiencing any problems whatsoever. Even went out to a party in the evening. (My cold seemed to have disappeared all day Saturday, must have been the 'high' i was on it's back with vengence now!) Went back Sunday for check up to be told up to driving standard and vision 20/20 in left eye and nearly there in my right and will proceed to get even better!! Well happy. A BIG THANK YOU TO MY SURGEON MR. SUMITH PERERA AND HIS TEAM AT ST. ALBANS, THEY'RE SO PROFESSIONAL, BUT STILL CARING AND REASURRING. This experience is really life changing and i can only describe it as a miracle.

The staff are very helpfull and understanding. I had surgery 1½yrs ago now and only recently found this site in error. In total I've had 3 operations. My vision has never been the same since, Some days I can see better than others. I still see halos and big starbursts and glare from lights. Due to this I cannot drive at night and therefore have undergone some serious changes in my lifestyle. But I would say on a plus side having day vision is a good feeling. If I could turn the clocks back I would but hey life goes on so think seriously before messing with your eyes. You only have 1set. If anyone else has problems with night vision contact me as I am still hopefull that maybe time will heal? But I have been informed otherwise by an optician. Thanks

I have never had any problems with my vision until I was in my forties when I found it hard when reading and doing anything that involved close work. I had only been wearing reading glasses for about 6 months but that was enough for me. I would always forget where I left them and when I wanted to read something I had to find my glasses! I felt self-conscious when wearing my glasses and I felt older and looked older than I actually am! I attended a consultation with Ultralase and was found unsuitable for laser but I was informed of a new procedure called Ultra-RF. They told me that this uses radio-waves instead of laser. I was found suitable and booked into the Leeds clinic for treatment. On the day the surgeon performed a final check on my eyes beforehand to make sure everything was OK to proceed with treatment. A nurse then came and told me about the drops I would be given & how to take them. The nurse was very clear about everything. The nurse then numbed my eye and I went into the treatment room. I laid down on the treatment bed and the surgeon put an implement into my eye to keep it open so I couldn’t blink. I didn’t feel anything and felt very comfortable and relaxed. They told me exactly what was happening so I knew what to expect. When the surgeon started treatment it was like it wasn’t happening to my eye. I could see beautiful coloured lights like fireworks and a rippling effect like water. I didn’t feel anything and the entire procedure only took about five minutes from start to finish. Having this treatment has meant that I do not need to wear reading glasses anymore and I am not struggling to read close up work that I have to do daily. Spending all day at a computer was a problem before treatment, now I read the screen clearly and don’t have to keep putting my glasses on and off! All I can say is that those who, like me, never had problems with their eyesight and are sick with reading glasses - get it done! I noticed a few patients have listed their prescription and other info so I have listed it below. Treated in Leeds by Suzannah Boytha (I think that’s the right spelling). Right Eye - +1.50 (-0.25) 70 Left Eye - +1.50 (-0.50) 90 Sue

I had lasik at Leeds with Dr Annonier. Although my husband had also had surgery there I was still very nervous - your eyes are so precious and mine used to get really dry, so I was worried that this might be made worse by the treatment. On the day, I left my husband with the kids as I went to the clinic. I was really apprehensive but the staff there were very reassuring. The nurse made me feel as if there was nothing to it and even offered to hold my hand during the lasering! After she explained what was going to happen she gave me a bag of medication and some really stylish eye protectors (not!) which I would need at night to stop me rubbing my eyes. The operating theatre was much smaller than I'd expected but this felt much less scary and everyone was so kind and reassuring that I started to feel alot better. It's really difficult to describe what happens - it's uncomfortable but I wouldn't say it hurts because they give you eye drops that completely numb your eye. You just stare at a flashing light and before you know it, it's all over! I wasn't keen on the singeing smell though, but they explained it wasn't actually burning, it's the cells evaporating under the ultraviolet light of the laser. Not sure I'm much the wiser but it was probably the worst bit! It only lasted a few seconds anyway. Straight afterwards, although my vision was a bit blurry I could make out shapes that I wouldn't have been able to before - the clock on the wall and even the doctor! I was led to a quiet room and given a cup of tea and sat with my eyes closed with my sunglasses on for a while until the doctor re-examined my eyes and said it had all gone well and I could go home. My kids thought it was funny me wearing sunglasses inside but I'm glad I had them because I hadn't expected how sensitive to the light I'd be - it was really painful and the half hour journey home seemed to take a lifetime before I could get home, get the curtains shut and curl up in bed. The eye drops they give you run right through your nasal cavity until they reach your throat and they taste disgusting, but they tell you it's normal and there's nothing to worry about. Next morning I woke up and once I'd unstuck the plastic eye shields I could see - it was FANTASTIC! I was -2.5 in both eyes and now I'm seeing better than 20/20, I can read the bottom line of the eyechart. Definitely worth any discomfort and I'd certainly recommend it. I've read some of the other comments on here and I can't vouch for how genuine they are but I can say that I can absolutely identify with what they're saying. Ultralase were absolutely brilliant with me and my eyesight is great. I just wish I'd done it earlier. Anyone who wants to email me about it, please do. Moggy

A superb result, as good as I hoped. I take my freedom from glasses for granted, having forgotten what life was like before treatment.

I have NEVER been able to see without glasses so waking up to perfectly clear vision is undescribable. Excellent treatment that I cannot recommend enough! Karen

I found the procedure utterly painless and I was very impressed with the professional attitude and care of the Ultralase St Albans team. I would highly recommend the procedure.
