4. The Verdict

laser eye surgery review verdict

I am really happy with the results. Apart from the machine not working and the long wait, the staff at this Optimax were really nice, friendly and helpful, as was Dr Patel. I would recommend this Optimax. – Tina Gibson

Most patients we spoke to were happy with the service. However, the long waiting times and poor communication mean this clinic misses the top spots on the list of the best laser eye surgery clinics in the UK. Still, Optimax makes it into these top lists:

lens replacement went well. Following that I needed remediation treatment on one eye – lazer treatment. I was asked back a total of 8 times to review my eyes but was not explained anything about what or why I should have dry eyes. treat ment for that was hardly explained and I returned many ties without any further treatment scheduled, nor with any explanation of how they would proceed. after a year almost to the day I was given lazer remediation treatment. On the day all the proper tests were carried out before the treatment. However I overheard that my data had crashed to computer which instructed the lazer what to do. Finally after 3 and a half hours someone came to me and said they had solved their”little ” problem and work would now commence. I was really scared by the time I sat in the chair for my eye to be lazered (!) and had to say to the doctor that I just had to trust his expertise that he would not proceed if anything was wrong.
Terrible after care service and lack of information. I wrote complaining to them on March1st (I think) and still have had only an acknowledgement, but no reply to my complaiint. Outrageous! Would not reccommend to anyone.

I had Lasik at Optimax in London some five years ago. My vision was very blurry afterwards yet apparently in their eye tests I was coming out at 20/20 vision. The blurring never cleared and I had to buy another pair of glasses to enable me to drive and work. They gave me incomplete aftercare information which resulted in dry eyes, it didn’t cause the blurriness but it didn’t help either. I ended up going to Moorfields who told me the surfaces of my eyes were some of the most uneven they’d seen. I had another operation at Moorfields which fixed my eyes, I wish I had gone there in the first place.

Nightmare.
It’s a hard sell from the outset.
A statistic I have never seen for any clinic is how many people do they say cannot have the treatment after the assessment???
I have found out since my treatment, through various means, research and eye examinations by independent opticians, that I was never a suitable candidate for this treatment.
As a result of the treatment, I have the halo affect at night, I have double vision, I cannot see clearly either close up or at long distance, I have dry and sore eyes.
Add to this the fact that I cannot use corrective lenses to make it any better and it is a complete disaster.
Me eyesight is worse in every way than it was before the treatment. Before the treatment, I was able to wear glasses or contact lenses that would correct my vision perfectly…
You may ask then, why did I go ahead with the treatment? I have asked myself the same question… The only answer I can give is that the clinic made it appear that the chances of an outcome anything short of perfect was just about unheard of. Saying that I was a good candidate and that the success rate was almost 100% for people with my type of eyes.
I was short sighted with a prescription of about -6.5 in each eye.
I had no astigmatisms.
On my three follow up exams, after months 1, 2 and 3, , I was refused access to the surgeon who performed the operation. I was taken to a separate area of the clinic into a normal eye exam room. I complained of the issues I have listed above. The consultant who carried out the eye tests said that my eyes would settle down in time. He gave me a basic sight test, with a chart, and because I could make out the line at 20/20 vision, he passed the test and stated that I had 20/20 vision. This despite the fact that I repeatedly told him that although I could make out the letters, I could see a shadow on each one. I also told him about the halo affect and again he told me that it goes away in time.
Well it’s was 3 years ago and if anything my sight is getting worse.
I know people who have had a good experience with corrective treatment, but in all cases they have had a prescription of under -3.
My advice to anyone, don’t do it, you can’t reverse it and if, think to yourself what if, just what if it doesn’t work… Do the research and read the forums from people for whom it hasn’t worked… there is no guarantee and the clinic will make you sign away any right you have to gain recompense.
The clinic have your money, they give you a basic sight test and tell you it’ll be ok in a few months… they don’t give a damn…

The worst thing I ever did. My life is completey miserable. I have had poor vision since the surgery and have been in pain every day.

The company tell lies before the surgery. They are a complete pile of bast**ds who don’t give a fu*k and just want to make money.

I feel that I have to add my comments to this page as I am extremely dissapointed about the treatment and service I have received from optimax.

Having been short-sighted since the age of 7, I decided I was sick of wearing contact lenses and glasses. I decided to have laser eye surgery at the Optimax clinic in Manchester. I had my right eye treated with the PRK method in June 2000. Unfortunatley the surgeon 'over-corrected' my eye, which resulted in me being long-sighted in that eye. After numerous consultations, and various doctors realising that my eyes were not going to correct themselves, they recommended that I have further surgery to correct the long sight in the right eye. However, this time they recommended the LASIK procedure as it is more 'accurate'!! This procedure took place in June 2001 and made no difference to my eye whatsoever.

After further consultations the doctors decided that further surgery would be too risky as my cornea is now too thin. They were supposed to be sending me to a specialist contact lens fitter, however to this date I have still not received an appointment from them. I have been chasing them but it seems they do not care.

I visited an optician myself to try and sort some contact lenses and glasses out. However, they told me that glasses are of no use to me as one eye is longsighted and the other short-sighted and so they don't work together properly, and also there are not many contact lens options available to me as the surface of my eye is so irregular. Basically my eyes are f****d.

I certainley would not recommend optimax to anybody. The service i have received has been terrible, as soon as they realised the surgery wasn't going to work for me they did not want to know.

If you really want laser surgery make sure you research all the options fully before you go for it.

Tried to contact them by telephone. Either continual ringing or line goes dead.
Filled in the form on their website. No response. Sent email no response.Sent angry email ,got a call back but they couldnt find the prescription that I had sent to them. They then located it and promised to call me in half an hour.
By the following day still no call. Sent threatening email (threat to contact directors etc) Received call within 20 minutes. Despite having my prescription they did not seem to know whether I had astigmatism or not.
They then told me I was not suitable. Other companies however seem to think I am.They seem to be the cheapest and no wonder!

Why are so many patients unhappy with their LASIK results? Admittedly being 6 you would hope for 20 -20 vision. On paper it looks a good company but if you ask patients what is their vision like. I feel they 3 out of 5 would say they are unhappy with the result. Poor night vision, being left having to still wear glasses, being left vision of -1 or-2 people need to be made aware.

Had an appointment to see the doctor on August 29th but got a call on the night before to say he doctor was now unavailable for an indefinite period, so appointment cancelled. Got a call on September 21st to contact the clinic. This was as a result of reading this website!! Got an appointment for Sunday29th September in Edinburgh for more "TOSCA" tests and an appointment with the doctor. Got the tests done, then came the BOMBSHELL!! The problems I have CANNOT be surgically repaired. The cornea on my right eye is now not thick enough to do any more.GREAT! I then had a consultation with a doctor (not the original, she is still not there!) He stated much the same as I had been told previously. He also said that HE does not do laser surgery on anyone with a prescription greater than 6.00 ( mine was 9+). He also recommended other types of surgery if I wish my other eye done. Contact lens implants etc. So basically I am no further forward than when I went there. I will need either glasses or contact lenses to see properly...... NOT WHAT THEY ADVERTISE ON THE TELLY!!!!!! I don't really know where I am at the moment.

1995 left eye done in Bristol. Excellent. Dec 2001. Right eye done by Dr Patel in Finchley Road, London. Disaster ! Was -0.75 before, now +1.00 !!!! I now have to return to the UK for a repeat op. incurring flight costs, loss of holiday (as had intended going to Italy) + it means that my 2 week holiday (when I had it done) was a complete waste as the recovery period ruined it. Also, I now wear glasses for the first time since 1995 !!! I have real problems judging distances as the other eye is -0.25. I have accidentally bumped into the back of a few cars as a result of impaired distance judgment. Their answer was "it says in the agreement that we couldn't guarantee results" I agree to a certain extent. I would expect to be close to ZERO i.e. +/- 0.25 (after all, they do use a Laser!), but to go from -0.75 to +1.00 is taking the p**s!! - I will contact the national health standard on telephone 01823345993. NOT VERY HAPPY !!!!!!!!!!!!!!! c.

I had Lasik treatment done on my right eye on March 5th at Golden Square, Aberdeen, by Dr Kalognomas, due to my having only mild refraction, in the hope of having monovision. He initially went to treat my left eye which was the slighter weaker one but stopped when discovering what he at first thought was a scratch. He explained later that it was too dry (I do use eye drops due to a thyroid problem and had explained all this at my pre-op check). He then suggested that he do the cheaper option but I declined so he then suggested looking to see if the right eye could be done, which I agreed to. Something obviously went wrong from what he said afterwards and I have been left with a haze over my eye and worse sight in it than before. I will see Dr Kalognomas again next Wednesday and hope to get an honest answer as to what went wrong but I will certainly never let him treat me again.
