4. The Verdict

laser eye surgery review verdict

I am really happy with the results. Apart from the machine not working and the long wait, the staff at this Optimax were really nice, friendly and helpful, as was Dr Patel. I would recommend this Optimax. – Tina Gibson

(3.9 out of 5)

Optimax has an average overall rating due to hit-and-miss patient care, based on nearly 9,000 independent reviews on Lasik Eyes since 2002.

Most patients we spoke to were happy with the service. However, the long waiting times and poor communication mean this clinic misses the top spots on the list of the best laser eye surgery clinics in the UK. Still, Optimax makes it into these top lists:

lens replacement went well. Following that I needed remediation treatment on one eye – lazer treatment. I was asked back a total of 8 times to review my eyes but was not explained anything about what or why I should have dry eyes. treat ment for that was hardly explained and I returned many ties without any further treatment scheduled, nor with any explanation of how they would proceed. after a year almost to the day I was given lazer remediation treatment. On the day all the proper tests were carried out before the treatment. However I overheard that my data had crashed to computer which instructed the lazer what to do. Finally after 3 and a half hours someone came to me and said they had solved their”little ” problem and work would now commence. I was really scared by the time I sat in the chair for my eye to be lazered (!) and had to say to the doctor that I just had to trust his expertise that he would not proceed if anything was wrong.
Terrible after care service and lack of information. I wrote complaining to them on March1st (I think) and still have had only an acknowledgement, but no reply to my complaiint. Outrageous! Would not reccommend to anyone.

I was very sceptical - eye surgery on e-bay? But what a bargain. Astigmatism more of a problem than my -1.75, but a week later I'm already at legal driving level, and the wonder of being able to see! Bi-lateral epi-lasek at Birmingham. Recommend it to anyone!

I am very happy with the service and the treatment in Croydon. I had LASIK on my left eye, which had -4.5 astigmatism and was midly shortsighted. I had a lot of reflections and ghosts. Now it's 5 days after treatment and my left eye is now a lot better than my right is. I could already read the 5th line on the chart on the 1-day aftercare. So I can really recommend Optimax. I've been at Croydon, treated by Dr. Venter.

12hrs of discomfort,1 week eyes a bit tired. Great vision now. Legal to drive after 1 week. Thanks to Leicester clinic.

If you're thinking about getting your eyes lasered then stop thinking and just do it! Sure there might be a bit of pain for a few days so just sleep until it's gone. The only problem I had was the fact that my hayfever kicked in the day after surgery. So if you have hayfever keep taking your tablets and check before lasering that it's ok to do so. If it's not then put off the op until winter. I wish I'd done it years ago instead of thinking about it. Highly recommended.

I am due to go for my 3 month check up and I have to say everything is great. I was badly shortsighted so I opted for Lasik I needed quick recovery with 3 children. Short term discomfort. I would recommend, don't think about it do it.

I had epi-lasek on both eyes (-2.00) just over one week ago. The first day was very painful, anisthetic wore off after about 3 hours, eyes were streaming and had to keep them closed. Took recommended advice and took the given painkillers and sleeping tablets and slept for 16 hours. Next couple of days were a lot better, but very light sensitive, also I'm not very tolerant of contact lenses, so the contact lense badages gave me some irriatation. Spent most of the time the next couple of days resting in dark room. Day 3 lenses were taken out and dramatic improvement. Vision really good already, no pain, just slightly light sensitive. One week on excellent. Watching TV fine, driving and able to work on my pc. Well worth it!

I have been wearing glasses since I was 18, and am now 35yrs. Both eyes are -3 with astigmatism. After a few months of research, I decided to go with Optimax, having read the reviews on this site I wanted to ensure that Dr Patel carried out the procedure in London. Having met Dr Patel on the 26th of July for my consultation, I was very, very impressed with his explanations, calmness and successful approach. I had a choice of either Epi-Lasek or Lasik. Having read all the documentation I had received, I decided to go for Lasik, the reasons for this were that the healing process is shorter and you are not required to wear contact lense bandages after. I arrived back at the clinic on Thursday 4th August ready for my treatment. Believe it or not, the paper work took more time than the treatment itself. I waited upstairs in the laser waiting room and saw people going in and coming out looking OK. I went in to the laser room and was greated by a nurse, she put a hair net on my head and bags on my feet. I then met Dr Patel again and laid down in the chair. I was soo nervous by this point, but Dr Patel was excellent in trying to calm me down. He explained the process the whole way through. It does not hurt at all. Once you have had the eye drops put in, you cannot feel a thing, the clamp did not even bother me. Yes you do smell burning, but come on!, you smell burning when the dentist is drilling your teeth. Once it was all over, Dr Patel asked me to sit up and told me it was all over and had been completed successfully. I was so impressed, I could actually see. I went home, with no pain what so every, it felt like my eyes were a bit scratchy that was all. The next day I went back for a check up and was told that I have 20/20 vision. I am still truely amazed and wish I had the treatment years ago. I definitely recommend it to everyone. I am quite happy to explain the process to anyone that is interested. Tamora

After the initial consultation with Optimax in London, I was told that I have slightly thinner than average corneas. My best option was to have the treatment done at Croydon, where they have a machine that cuts a thinner flap than normal. It took a considerable length of time to get a consultation with the Croydon surgeon -a couple of months, with several phone calls (including some promised call-backs that never happened) and an email to the founder of the company(which seemed to speed things up enormously). I got a slot for a consultation and if I wanted, treatment the same day. From that point on, everything has been amazing - surreal, almost. Professor Venter was calm, professional, confidence-inspiring, patient and friendly with me the entire time. I had gone to the second consultation 50:50 about whether to have it at all, after the consultation I was sure it was the right decision. The procedure took 10 minutes, was pain-free (although I was aware of all that was happening - you can feel the flap being moved, feel the laser working etc) and I was able to leave less than an hour later. It's uncomfortable, I had to take drops four times a day and wear plastic eye shields taped to my face in bed. But if you're put off by that you probably shouldn't be thinking about it at all - its worth the discomfort. I've now been back for two follow-up appointments, my presription has gone from -6/-5.75 to 0/0, ie no prescription at all. I had LASIK with Wavefront, to minimise the night blindness. I can see brilliantly at night with only slight blurring of headlights/streetlights etc, and can easily see well enough to drive. I've now finished all the drops and just have one more appointment in a month to check the scar (small red mark at the top of my eyes under the eyelid, invisible to others and painless) has healed. So in summary (and sorry to ramble on so much) - LASIK worked brilliantly for me, no pain and perfect vision. Thanks to all at Optimax especially Professor Venter.

I had epi-lasek done at Glasgow clinic, purchased via ebay!! All staff have been totally professional and put me at my ease straight away. I was driving around 4 days after surgery and have had no problems, best of all I can see (probably better than some of my friends with and without glasses). THANK YOU OPTIMAX

15 Aug 2005

I have been considering the eye surgery since the early 90's, until my wife saw the offer advertised on ebay of all things, so i thought about it and took the plunge. The consultation was very thorough and intensive. I didn't realise what you can tell from your eyes. The consultation told me that i would get a very good result. All the bad points were clearly pointed out to me and i was under no pressure at any time to have them done. I chose the epi-lasik and to have both eyes done at there and then. The staff and surgeon were very helpful and made you feel relaxed. The operation was amazingly quick, less than 30 seconds per eye and there was an initial sight of perfect vision after, which makes you feel like a small child with a new toy. The after care is very good and advice on eye recovery is excellant and what is needed to speed recovery, after 6 months i now have perfect vision, my eyes still feel dry at times but that is getting less and less, i still use eye drops when needed especially if it's a hot day, i tend to wear sunglasses more now than i used to as at times the light is too much. Optimax may be the cheapest on the market and they do have great offers from time to time but don't let that put you off. They price you pay is not a compromise on quality or professionalism and the aftercare service is still very good.
