I’m very happy with my laser treatment. There’s nothing to worry about – there’s no pain, and I would recommend it to anybody. The aftercare at Optical Express is also very good. I just wish i had done it years ago. – Philip Lavelle
Optical Express uses world leading technology, and their laser platform – the VISX S4IR – delivers safe, accurate and precise results. Over 99% of Optical Express patients achieved 20/20 vision or better following treatment, according to a study carried out in June 2017.
With over 25 years’ experience in eye care, Optical Express boasts excellent surgical outcomes, and has invested £400 million in technology to offer advanced methods for vision correction.
Optical Express has 128 clinics in the UK alone – far more than any other eye surgery provider. Its locations include London, Liverpool, Manchester, Leeds, Glasgow, Edinburgh, and Dublin, with many more situated in all corners of the country.

Laser Eye Surgery
Laser eye surgery is a simple procedure that can correct your vision in a matter of minutes. Optical Express offers the most popular types: LASIK and LASEK (if you are not suitable for the surgical LASIK).
In both treatments, a cool beam advanced laser reshapes the cornea (the surface of your eye). Optical Express uses a technology called iDesign, which is based on Wavefront technology and takes thousands of eye measurements to produce the best results.
Lens Replacement
Optical Express has 20 years’ experience in lens replacement surgery. This surgery is a popular treatment for people with long distance vision, short distance vision, and even cataracts.
An eye consultant can help you decide which surgery best suits your needs:
- Refractive lens exchange (RLE) – This surgery replaces the natural lens with a synthetic intraocular lens (IOL) implant.
- Phakic IOL – This type of IOL is an alternative to laser eye surgery for patients with strong prescriptions.
- YAG laser treatment – YAG laser capsulotomy is a non-invasive procedure used to treat refractive former lens exchange patients whose vision starts to fade over the years.
Cataract Surgery
Optical Express performs the highest number of cataract surgeries – after the NHS, according to its website.
Cataracts are small, blurry patches on your eyes, giving you cloudy vision. Cataract surgery involves removing your damaged lens, and replacing it with a premium synthetic one for sharper near and distance vision.
Aftercare
Optical Express custom-fits its aftercare plan to every patient. This plan includes any medication that will aid the healing process, optometrist-led follow-up appointments, and an out-of-hours medical helpline.
Patients receive 12 months’ continued care as standard, and Optical Express recommends annual examinations to maintain your eye health.
Safety Record
All surgical procedures carry a degree of risk. However, laser eye surgery has an impressive success rate, and is the most popular elective surgery in the world.
99.2% of patients achieved at least 20|20 vision following surgery at Optical Express, based on a study of 190,231 Optical Express patients with the most common prescriptions. That’s why this eye clinic promises 20|20 vision or your money back.
Just be aware that the risks increase the more complicated the surgery. Optical Express will provide a screening service to check whether you are suitable for surgical treatment.

I had bilateral wavefront lasik surgery at Newcastle 9.2.06 (a little more than 24 hours ago) Staff at clinic were very friendly and explained everything step by step. The worst part was the pre op tests (I had wavefront with iris recognition) when I had difficulty keeping my eyes from blinking. The surgery itself was painless and perhaps I'm lucky because I haven't experienced any soreness or dry eyes so far. My vision this morning exceeded 20:20 but I think lacks some "definition" but I am assured this will improve. Difficulty reading but I was told this would happen and have bought a couple of pairs cheap reading glaases. Am quite able to use computer without any visual aid. Best thing was waking up in middle of the night and being able to see the time without searching for glasses. Not cheap bu I think it will prove worth it.

First of all let me say thank you to the excellent Mr George and his team at Birmingham who performed Wavefront Lasik in both eyes on 7th February, they were both very professional and calming. Also my thanks go to their Commercial Manager who when faced with a 'cock up' by the Meadowhall branch with my notes, held his hands up and apologised and offered without hesitation an upgrade of my treatment. Every company makes mistakes but the way they resolve them is the true test and in this Optical Express came through with flying colours. As for my eyes, 10 days after treatment Im still having some dry eye which does affect my vision but there are plenty of moments of real clarity which hopefully will become more the norm in the weeks and months to come. Is it worth it?, hell yes!

Surgery on the 08/10/05 in birmingham. Excellent service and after care. No pain what so ever. Wish i had it done years ago.Discharged onlyafter 3 months. Now have 20/20 vision. Just one thing to remember, you have to follow the after care instructions and do everything that you are told to do, then you will have no problems. After all the people that are caring for you know what is best. Please listen to them. They are the best. Thank you again for making it possible for me to see again. It has changed my life so much.

I had lasek five weeks ago at Milton Keynes. The consultants have been very helpful and friendly throughout. The procedure itself I found very uncomfortable and quite traumatic, particularly for the first eye but I think I was just not mentally prepared. The discomfort the following week was about the same as pealing onions - very watery and much more comfortable with eyes shut. However, after I'd had the protective lenses removed after three days the recovery has been great! My left eye had perfect vision almost immediately. My right eye took a further week before it caught up which was a bit disorientating. Three weeks after the procedure my eyesight was great! Five weeks later (now), I have forgotten what it was like to wear glasses (after 20 years) and am just so pleased I've had it done. I still get dry eyes in the mornings but I am assured this will pass. I highly recommend it to anyone who is considering it. It is not pain or trauma free but definitely worth it!

I had the LASEK treatment in September 2005. Initially, the check up before the treatment was straight forward and I was comforted by the optician, Chris at Milton Keynes, who I felt was professional in what he did, even though the administrative staff could do with some improvement, and it was for this reason that I went with Optical Express. The surgeon and his team were great and inspired confidence in what was about to happen. It's not until you sit in the chair and the chair swivels around and you're looking at the laser when you think "holy cow, what am I doing here?". A lot of things run through your mind just before the surgery, but then you have to bite the bullet and take that plunge and just do it. After the procedure, I could see the clock on the wall fairly clearly - 4pm. It only took 15 mins to change my vision. About 5 mins after the procedure, my eyes were streaming with tears and they began to hurt. The best thing I did was to get home, get my husband to put some drops in my eyes, take some pain killers, put the necessary eye protector on and go to sleep. The first 16 hours were really tough. But then after that it got a lot easier. I had 98% good vision within 2 weeks of surgery. Exactly 3 months after the surgery, I had my check up and the optician couldn't tell that I had eye laser surgery since the cornea had healed very well. The surgery is the best thing I have ever done and would highly recommend it to any one who is considering it. It's changed my life completely - I can see my toes when I'm in the shower, I don't have to worry about glasses steaming up when I open the oven door and it doesn't matter if it rains. 5 months on and I am still grateful to the team that has made this possible and thank my luck stars that I did this. Well worth the pain and the occasional dry eyes.

I would recommend this to anyone. I got Wavefront surgery yesterday in the Optical Express in Glasgow and was in and out in 40 mins. As soon as it was over I could read the signs on the walls round the room, something I could never have done before without my glasses or contact lenses. The day after and my eyesight is even better than it was before. The only part of the whole process that really scared me is the check up the following day, knowing what the risks are you tend to worry that something might be wrong but all was great! I am glad I had it done and thank you to the staff and the surgeon.

I now have better than 20/20 vision it feels great and the surgery was painless

All I'd heard was true! After 50 years wearing glasses I am now normal. Lasik surgery yesterday. No pain. Only slight grittiness. Very light sensitive for about 3 hours. Great monovision almost instantly. Was -4 and -8, today "better than 20/20". Highly recommend Glasgow Renfield Street Clinic for professional caring staff. Thanks to all. - May

Had bilateral wavefront Lasek on Tuesday at the Birmingham facility. Lovely staff and facilities. Gave my wife the opportunity to sample the new Bullring shopping, which may prove expensive if you are kept waiting too long. Treatment was excellent and Mr George puts you at ease with his relaxed and friendly style. Had a bit of a journey back to Liverpool with the wife driving. Dont forgt your sunglasses! Even though it was nighttime traveling home the glare of vehicles/ roadlights can be quite harsh. They fix you up with all your medication including local pain relief drops if you need them. Found I needed it first morning, but coping fine with the lube drops since, but had to keep light levels low. Eyesight is fine and its a great feeling knowing you dont need glasses anymore. Due to have my bandage lenses out tomorrow. Still its been nice to have had 4 days out of work too Yes most definately wished I could have done it sooner!!
