1. Optical Express Laser Eye Surgery Review

I’m very happy with my laser treatment. There’s nothing to worry about – there’s no pain, and I would recommend it to anybody. The aftercare at Optical Express is also very good. I just wish i had done it years ago. – Philip Lavelle

Optical Express uses world leading technology, and their laser platform – the VISX S4IR – delivers safe, accurate and precise results. Fun fact: Optical Express is the only vision correction provider to invest in the iFS150 intraLASE in each of its clinics – the same technology that led to NASA backing laser eye surgery for astronauts in 2007.

Over 99% of Optical Express patients achieved 20/20 vision or better following treatment, according to a study carried out in June 2017.

With over 25 years’ experience in eye care, Optical Express boasts excellent surgical outcomes, and has invested £400 million in technology to offer advanced methods for vision correction.

Optical Express has 128 clinics in the UK alone – far more than any other eye surgery provider. Its locations include London, Liverpool, Manchester, Leeds, Glasgow, Edinburgh, and Dublin, with many more situated in all corners of the country.

2. Optical Express Laser Eye Surgery Cost

True, it was an expensive operation, but I spent £500 a year on contact lenses and optician appointments – I see it as an investment! – Dave Reyner

Laser eye surgery at Optical Express costs from just £595, or from £1,995 for lens replacement surgery. Of course, these prices depend on the treatment you choose, as well as your prescription, so you’ll want to pop in for a free consultation to get a tailored quote.

Optical Express is one of the cheapest laser eye surgery clinics in the UK. Its prices are well below average, compared to over 70 leading eye clinics and hospitals nationwide.

There are also a range of pay monthly finance options, so you can benefit from eye surgery for less than £50 a month – and it’s 0% finance for 10 month contracts.

Are there any hidden costs? No, the consultation is free, and you even get free eye tests worth £800. The only downside is not having fixed prices like at Optegra and Optimax, but at least the costs are lower at the end of the day.

Laser Eye Surgery

Laser eye surgery is a simple procedure that can correct your vision in a matter of minutes. Optical Express offers the most popular types: LASIK and LASEK (if you are not suitable for the surgical LASIK).

In both treatments, a cool beam advanced laser reshapes the cornea (the surface of your eye). Optical Express uses a technology called iDesign, which is based on Wavefront technology and takes thousands of eye measurements to produce the best results.

Lens Replacement

Optical Express has 20 years’ experience in lens replacement surgery. This surgery is a popular treatment for people with long distance vision, short distance vision, and even cataracts.

An eye consultant can help you decide which surgery best suits your needs:

  • Refractive lens exchange (RLE) – This surgery replaces the natural lens with a synthetic intraocular lens (IOL) implant.
  • Phakic IOL – This type of IOL is an alternative to laser eye surgery for patients with strong prescriptions.
  • YAG laser treatment – YAG laser capsulotomy is a non-invasive procedure used to treat refractive former lens exchange patients whose vision starts to fade over the years.

Cataract Surgery

Optical Express performs the highest number of cataract surgeries – after the NHS, according to its website.

Cataracts are small, blurry patches on your eyes, giving you cloudy vision. Cataract surgery involves removing your damaged lens, and replacing it with a premium synthetic one for sharper near and distance vision.

Aftercare

Optical Express custom-fits its aftercare plan to every patient. This plan includes any medication that will aid the healing process, optometrist-led follow-up appointments, and an out-of-hours medical helpline.

Patients receive 12 months’ continued care as standard, and Optical Express recommends annual examinations to maintain your eye health.

Safety Record

All surgical procedures carry a degree of risk. However, laser eye surgery has an impressive success rate, and is the most popular elective surgery in the world.

99.2% of patients achieved at least 20|20 vision following surgery at Optical Express, based on a study of 190,231 Optical Express patients with the most common prescriptions. That’s why this eye clinic promises 20|20 vision or your money back.

Just be aware that the risks increase the more complicated the surgery. Optical Express will provide a screening service to check whether you are suitable for surgical treatment.

I had my eyes treated in October 2005 at Optical Express in Minshall Street Manchester and would recommend the treatment to anyone considering it, my life has change for the better - also the staff there were excellent knowledgeable and caring - also they make a great cuppa coffee.

Testimonial The object of my having corrective laser surgery was to dispense with the wearing of glasses on a permanent basis, Optical Express has allowed me to do just that and in the most seamless fashion. I was made to feel special from the moment i walked into the store for consultation, thereafter, i experienced the most professional service i have encountered from any retailer, I was treated as an individual, with great skill and with the comfort of knowing that this operation was going to be a sucess from start to finish. The whole process is wonderfully slick, without ever getting the impression you are part of a production line. The actual operation is pain free, the pre and post operation care unbeleivably case sensitive and with the added bonus of very little time off work. I am eternally grateful to Optical Express for their attentive care, for what is not an insignificant operation. I now have vison that is well above 20-20 and i am glasses free. I cannot thank you enough! Dick Best Former England & British Lions coach

I had my Lasik treatment on the 4th Jan at Optical Express's Bluewater surgery with Mr Crewe-Brown. The process was easier than going to the dentist!, it took from start to finish 10 minutes. There was no pain, a little discomfort as they prepared you (which lasted 5-10 seconds) and the laser lasted 20 seconds per eye, it was just like looking at the red dots when you go for an eye test. Within 1 hour I noticed a difference in sight and this gradually improved all day till that night I had perfect sight. At my 1 week check up the optometrist said I had BETTER than 20/20, I thought 20/20 was the best you could aim for!.

I had Lasik surgery at the Shaftesbury Avenue branch on December 14 and the whole experience has been smooth and painless. My eyes took a while to stabilise after I stopped wearing my gas permeable contact lenses and it was reassuring that I was made to wait more than two months until staff were completely happy that I was ready for the treatment. The surgery itself was fine - the idea was far more traumatic than the reality - and it didn't hurt at all. Mr Giledi and the theatre staff were professional, kind, patient and informative and I was given plenty of opportunity to ask questions. After the procedure I had a bit of grittiness for a few hours and my left eye is still slightly dry so I'm continuing with the artificial tears, but I don't have any discomfort. The aftercare has been good, although my 1 week and 1 month appointments have both run very late - my only criticism. Although Mr Giledi and the Optical Express team were excellent, I would still say that if you're thinking of having laser surgery, do your research and consider getting a second opinion, just to be sure this is the right decision for your eyes. In retrospect (after reading about lasik obsessively following my treatment!) I don't think I understood enough about the potential problems with lasik, despite having read the literature, and I certainly don't think I knew enough about the significance of pupil size and corneal thickness. Having said that, my eyes are healing well, and although I had intermittent blurriness in my left eye in the first few weeks my vision is now very clear, at night as well as in the daytime - 20/15 in both eyes. Fantastic!

Re: Lasik, laser eye surgery I cannot thank Optical Express Milton Keynes enough. It is so wonderful to have my eyesight back to where it was ten years ago. Things like driving; putting on my makeup; being able tell the difference between my shampoo and conditioner bottles in a steamy bathroom; watching television; even recognising people I know when out shopping - all of which I can now do without glasses. It's just wonderful! Although I was slightly nervous about having the procedure done, I need not have worried. The staff were extremely helpful and talked me through each step of the process, taking time to answer my queries and explain anything I was unsure about. I have no hesitation in recommending Optical Express for their laser eye surgery. Thank you so much Dee Curley

I went back today to Optical Express, Milton Keynes for my 3 month post op check up. My eyesight is now better than 20/20 which is wonderful. Before, I was short-sighted and suffered from dry eye. Mr Jain my surgeon recommended Lasik surgery for me. I was expecting an overnight miracle but it was not to be. It took about a week until I was able to say the operation was worth it, I had trouble focusing near and distant objects, I also had to take a week off work. As everybody says 'I wish I had done it sooner'.Very light sensitive still, night driving is difficult. But no regrets at all. Wonderful!

Optical Express, West Quay – an apology. I was booked for treatment on 11th January but it was rescheduled to February due to AC failure, so I left a very negative comment on this site about customer care. David Carson (Optical Express) responded to my comment (several emails) to explain in full and offer some accommodation, both for my treatment and my son (not booked yet, but probably will soon). He also emailed when all problems were resolved, offered to pay travel if I wanted treatment at another branch, and to give me priority if the February appointment was cancelled. On top of this, on 20th January Optical Express said they could fit me in on the 25th January. Clearly customer care is something they care about – I got it wrong. I guess I let my disappointment get the better of me when I posted my last comment. Sorry Optical Express. The operation and follow up – Mr Stefan Klopper and the team did the operation – caring and friendly people, and a nice job done. Other staff took care of follow up, also very caring and helpful people. My eyes – I have been mildly shortsighted with astigmatism in both eyes (almost 180 degrees to one another) forever, and in recent years needed reading specs. One day after the operation I had 20/20 in one eye, better than driving standard in the other. Better than 20/20 in both eyes after a week. Obviously I still need the reading specs (Apart from Star trek, no-one can fix this). All the good things you have read are what I have got, and side effects are minimal and dropping, so I am not going to say it all again, other than “my new eyes are lovely” – thank you everyone.

I had the lasek treatment done in November 05. The treatment itself was painless and over within minutes, staff put you at ease. Eyes were quite sore afterwards, but worth it, i now have better vision without my glasses than i did with them!!. I recommend anyone who is considering this to have it done it is well worth it believe me
