1. Optical Express Laser Eye Surgery Review

I’m very happy with my laser treatment. There’s nothing to worry about – there’s no pain, and I would recommend it to anybody. The aftercare at Optical Express is also very good. I just wish i had done it years ago. – Philip Lavelle

Optical Express uses world leading technology, and their laser platform – the VISX S4IR – delivers safe, accurate and precise results. Fun fact: Optical Express is the only vision correction provider to invest in the iFS150 intraLASE in each of its clinics – the same technology that led to NASA backing laser eye surgery for astronauts in 2007.

Over 99% of Optical Express patients achieved 20/20 vision or better following treatment, according to a study carried out in June 2017.

With over 25 years’ experience in eye care, Optical Express boasts excellent surgical outcomes, and has invested £400 million in technology to offer advanced methods for vision correction.

Optical Express has 128 clinics in the UK alone – far more than any other eye surgery provider. Its locations include London, Liverpool, Manchester, Leeds, Glasgow, Edinburgh, and Dublin, with many more situated in all corners of the country.

Laser Eye Surgery

Laser eye surgery is a simple procedure that can correct your vision in a matter of minutes. Optical Express offers the most popular types: LASIK and LASEK (if you are not suitable for the surgical LASIK).

In both treatments, a cool beam advanced laser reshapes the cornea (the surface of your eye). Optical Express uses a technology called iDesign, which is based on Wavefront technology and takes thousands of eye measurements to produce the best results.

Lens Replacement

Optical Express has 20 years’ experience in lens replacement surgery. This surgery is a popular treatment for people with long distance vision, short distance vision, and even cataracts.

An eye consultant can help you decide which surgery best suits your needs:

  • Refractive lens exchange (RLE) – This surgery replaces the natural lens with a synthetic intraocular lens (IOL) implant.
  • Phakic IOL – This type of IOL is an alternative to laser eye surgery for patients with strong prescriptions.
  • YAG laser treatment – YAG laser capsulotomy is a non-invasive procedure used to treat refractive former lens exchange patients whose vision starts to fade over the years.

Cataract Surgery

Optical Express performs the highest number of cataract surgeries – after the NHS, according to its website.

Cataracts are small, blurry patches on your eyes, giving you cloudy vision. Cataract surgery involves removing your damaged lens, and replacing it with a premium synthetic one for sharper near and distance vision.

Aftercare

Optical Express custom-fits its aftercare plan to every patient. This plan includes any medication that will aid the healing process, optometrist-led follow-up appointments, and an out-of-hours medical helpline.

Patients receive 12 months’ continued care as standard, and Optical Express recommends annual examinations to maintain your eye health.

Safety Record

All surgical procedures carry a degree of risk. However, laser eye surgery has an impressive success rate, and is the most popular elective surgery in the world.

99.2% of patients achieved at least 20|20 vision following surgery at Optical Express, based on a study of 190,231 Optical Express patients with the most common prescriptions. That’s why this eye clinic promises 20|20 vision or your money back.

Just be aware that the risks increase the more complicated the surgery. Optical Express will provide a screening service to check whether you are suitable for surgical treatment.

I had lasik treatment in Manchester after the consultation in Leeds. I found the service alround to be very friendly and very profesional. The after care has been 100%I could'nt ask for more. The treatment was painless , although a little uncomfortable, this was soon forgotten after a mattter of days. I would highly recommend to anyone to have this done, after wearing glasses for two thirds of my life this has been a life changing expreience! Thanks to all involved at the Manchester and Leeds branches.

05 May 2005

Prior to having the Bilateral Wavefront Lasik surgery in April 2004 I had worn glasses for about 8 years. Initially I had needed glasses for night driving and for definition in reading a screen at a presentation or movie, for example, but it developed to a point where I needed them all the time (albeit my prescription was relatively minor at -1.50/-1.75 (right) and -0.75/-1.50 (left). I am very physically active (golf, skiing, fitness) and found the hassle of glasses a major factor. I first became interested in eye surgery when I heard that Tiger Woods (Ranked No.1 professional golfer) had it done. I decided that for to him have the surgery, from a risk perspective involved hundreds of millions of dollars and being totally reliant on the quality of his eyesight, then the success rate must be pretty good. To be honest, the deciding factor for me in chosing LaserVision as opposed to a cheaper high street option was a combination of three factors (1) if they were good enough for Richard Branson then they must be damned good (2) they were more expensive than a lot of their competitors and (3) the surgery would be carried out by the same surgeon that is advertised on their website, Michael Jeffrey i.e. I was guaranteed a level of experience. Wrongly or rightly I made the assumption/linkage that price was a reflection of quality (you get what you pay for) and that their equipment would be as good as you could get. My thinking was "you can save £500 on your holiday, but don't mess with your eyes, you only have one pair!" I have nothing but good things to say about LaserVision. I have recommended them to friends, one of them has since had the surgery done and feels the same as I do. I have just had my final check up after 12 months and have to say other than a couple of minutes of mild discomfort during surgery, followed by a few hours during which your eyes sting a little, that is it. I tell my friends that on a scale of 1 to 10 in comparison to having a filling at the dentist, the process is about a 4. It is amazing that the surgery takes as little as 40 secs per eye (I understand that this increases slightly depending on your prescription). Over this last 12 month period I have been doing a full time MBA at Henley Management College. This has involved a huge amount of reading and work on the laptop and it has never been a problem. The first month or so I experienced dry eyes after long periods on the laptop but that was sorted out by the drops that I prescribed. This only lasted a month or so and now I never have to use the drops even after long intensive periods on the laptop or reading. The staff at LaserVision are all incredibly supportive and know what they are doing. A major reassurance was that everything that happened in surgery was exactly as they had explained to me the day before - nobody likes suprises! I believe that the quality of my vision is better now than when I wore glasses and the feeling of freedom is fantastic. No more lenses and cleaning glasses! Having been through the treatment I attribute a lot of the negative perception relating to laser eye surgery to two main issues: (1) ignorance - the technology has progressed massively over the last 10 years and this is reflected in the process. Somebody that had surgery 10 years ago would have a totally different perception of the process and recovery time. (2) After care and taking care of yourself. I was very careful about not touching my eyes and covering them overnight with the guards provided and followed the instruction regarding the anti-biotic drops and moisturizing drops religously. I hear stories about people that have taken short cuts in this respect and link the "horror stories" to perhaps an element of not following the post operative guidelines (which are explained in detail to you). There is obviously an element of risk in all these things, but in my case the risk has been far exceeded by the benefits.

I had Lasek done on 24.03.05 at Manchester Optical Express on Minshall Street. The experience from start to finish was very professional, informative and all staff were very friendly and put my mind at ease. My Surgeon Mr K M Khan, can only be praised for his excellent ophthalmic abilities as can that off the entire staff. I now have 20/20 vision and could not recommend this procedure enough. If in doubt go and have a consultation!

06 May 2005

Had Lasik surgery at Glasgow clinic and consultation/aftercare at Edinburgh clinic. The staff were friendly and very professional. The procedure was quick and painless, slight discomfort afterwards as my eyes felt very gritty and watery for a few hours. My vision is now better than 20:20. I would recommend optical express to anyone considering laser vision treatment. I would like to thank Dr Boytha and all the staff at Glasgow and Edinburgh laser clinics.

Very impressed with the result!

10 May 2005

I had LASEK treatment at the Bristol branch on April 20th. I was short sighted with a perscription of -2.25 in both eyes. Surgery was more 'relaxing' than I anticipated. It was all over in 10 - 15 minutes and, although hazey, could see the result straight away. Reading number plates and signs on my way home! The next few days were uncomfortable but quite pain free. I spent the first day lying on the sofa listeneing to the radio with my eyes closed most the time. I used the pain killing drops once...during the second night I awoke with my eyes stinging and streaming a bit, as if chopping oinoins!! By day 3 the bandage lenses had outstayed their welcome, comparable to wearing contacts for too long, and I had a bit of double vision in my left eye. A welcome relief when the lenses were removed, although it set my eyesight back very blurry for the rest of the day. I awoke next day with really clear vision and it has improved on a day by day basis ever since. I went back to work on day 6 and initially struggled on the computer...eyes drying out, difficult to read, had to set extra large fonts, but this also improved on a daily basis. By the fortnightly check up I was 'just' reading the 20/20 vision line although I struggled a bit. I was told this would improve as I reduced the steroid drops and was mainly due to my eyes still being a bit dry. I am using the lubricating drops less and less now. Its now nearly 3 weeks down the line....my vision is fantastic and still seems to be improving. The computer is now a lot easier to use and I have set the fonts back to normal size!! No regrets what so ever and would highly recommend it!! Thanks to Mr Aziz, Carmel, Hannah and all at the Bristol branch.

I had surgery 5/02/05,its the best thing ive had done!I was very short sighted and now i can see without glasses.I recommend this to anyone.

After much thought and many visits to this website I finally had Lasik surgery on 06/05/05 in Milton Keynes at 1:15pm. The procedure itself was painless, and was not as frightening as I thought it was going to be. There were no burning smells as I have read from other reports on this site. The surgeon and staff work very quickly and tell you exactly what is happening at every stage. The whole procedure only took about 10/15 minutes, and although a little blurry you can see the results immediately. I was home by 2:00pm Yes, your eyes are uncomfortable for about 3 hours, feels just like having contacts in for too long when your eyes are tired, but if you can sleep through this, or keep your eyes closed, you wake up with clear vision. I was watching TV by 5:30pm. I had my check up the next morning and have excellent vision. I was told that due to my age, (45) I would have to wear reading glasses, in the week since I have had Lasik, I have used them only once. I would highly recommend this procedure as I am so pleased with the result, having worn glasses for the past 32 years. I would like to thank Mr Klopper (the surgeon), Daci (the Optometrist) and all the staff and nurses who looked after me so well.

13 May 2005

well, I had LASIK 1 month ago. All I can say is WOW, what a fantasic result I now have 20:20 vision for the first time in my life. The procedure was simple, pain free and quick with the only side effect being my nerves !! Afterwards I could see the results straight away. Some discomfort for 4/5 hours afterwards (similar to the sort of feeling you get when chopping onions). Highly recommended, just like having a magic wand waved over you !! really.

14 May 2005

Had Lasik at the Birmingham clinic 4 weeks ago - just had my month check up. Perfect (better than 20/20) vision for somebody who has had bilateral vision of -7.00 since age 4!Best thing I have ever done, completely changed my life. I was very scared but the staff were bloody marvellous, veryprofessional but very friendly. Afterwards discomfort no worse than leaving contact lenses in for too longo worse. So far 5 of my colleagues have been for a consultation as mine was so successful. Would highly recommend this clinic
