Laser Eye Surgery
Laser eye surgery is a simple procedure that can correct your vision in a matter of minutes. Optical Express offers the most popular types: LASIK and LASEK (if you are not suitable for the surgical LASIK).
In both treatments, a cool beam advanced laser reshapes the cornea (the surface of your eye). Optical Express uses a technology called iDesign, which is based on Wavefront technology and takes thousands of eye measurements to produce the best results.
Lens Replacement
Optical Express has 20 years’ experience in lens replacement surgery. This surgery is a popular treatment for people with long distance vision, short distance vision, and even cataracts.
An eye consultant can help you decide which surgery best suits your needs:
- Refractive lens exchange (RLE) – This surgery replaces the natural lens with a synthetic intraocular lens (IOL) implant.
- Phakic IOL – This type of IOL is an alternative to laser eye surgery for patients with strong prescriptions.
- YAG laser treatment – YAG laser capsulotomy is a non-invasive procedure used to treat refractive former lens exchange patients whose vision starts to fade over the years.
Cataract Surgery
Optical Express performs the highest number of cataract surgeries – after the NHS, according to its website.
Cataracts are small, blurry patches on your eyes, giving you cloudy vision. Cataract surgery involves removing your damaged lens, and replacing it with a premium synthetic one for sharper near and distance vision.
Aftercare
Optical Express custom-fits its aftercare plan to every patient. This plan includes any medication that will aid the healing process, optometrist-led follow-up appointments, and an out-of-hours medical helpline.
Patients receive 12 months’ continued care as standard, and Optical Express recommends annual examinations to maintain your eye health.
Safety Record
All surgical procedures carry a degree of risk. However, laser eye surgery has an impressive success rate, and is the most popular elective surgery in the world.
99.2% of patients achieved at least 20|20 vision following surgery at Optical Express, based on a study of 190,231 Optical Express patients with the most common prescriptions. That’s why this eye clinic promises 20|20 vision or your money back.
Just be aware that the risks increase the more complicated the surgery. Optical Express will provide a screening service to check whether you are suitable for surgical treatment.
4. The Verdict

Had my monthly checkup today. Both eyes better than 20/20 - and my left eye improved to this level from one wk check up. Even though building work going on Southampton branch still very helpful, attentive and answer all questions. Now need to go back in 2 mths time but very very happy with everything. Would not hesitate to recommend these - anyone wanting £50 off I have recommend vouchers which works out at £25 per eye discount if you proceed with surgery.

I'm French and I heard to the radio about Maxivision what is now Eye Clinic.I did it at Birmingham, they have a new laser with tracer. I took my first appointement the May 27th and I was suitable for the lasik. It was great. My treatment was June 18th, it was very nice, They are very kind and would like to say thank you to the Surgeon Dr Kantilal Jain and assistants Jo and Sabrina. I have any regrets and for me it's like a miracle to see everthing. My sight was -5.25 each eye and -1 astigmatism et the day after the treatment it was 20/20 or 6/6. My month appointement will be next monday and I hope that my sight will be the same.

I'm one year on from my Lasik procedure which was done at the Reading branch in August 2002. I've been very happy with the results. My daytime vision has been excellent, it's as near to perfect as I imagine. Nightime vision isn't quite as good but still well within acceptable limits. The real bonus is my close vision, before surgery I was told I would need to wear reading glasses post-op. This came as no suprise as I had to do this when I wore contac lenses. After a couple of days I noticed I was not wearing them any more! No complaints here. The dryness problem (which never was excessive anyway) disappeared after a few months.

Yesterday, I attended the eye clinic in Southampton to undergo lasik. It is something I have been thinking about for quite some time, but was always put off by some bad publicity. As I work in an opticians, most of the professionals I have spoken to about it were never very keen on the idea. As I have worn glasses since the age of two and relied solely on my specs (prescription -5.75 with a -2.50 cyl) it was going to be by no means easy to correct the short sightedness let alone the astignatism. Everyone at the clinic were very helpful and put you at ease. Luckily, didn;t have to wait long. Professional Clive Mortimer was the surgeon and after a chat with him he put me totally at ease, but he did explain that he couldn' t guarantee that he would eliminate the specs but could certainly reduce the prescription somewhat. The procedure was very quick and totally painless, a trip to the dentist is far worse. The staff and Professor Mortimer were very reassuring throughout and explained at every point what was happening. Within ten minutes it was over and as I came out, I was surprised to read the fire exit sign, even through I had eye shields on. The worse part of the day was having to walk through West Quay shopping centre to the car park with these shields on and everyone staring. The half hour journey home was spent in darkness as by now it was a liitle uncomfortable to have my eyes open. I was given some sleeping pills and slept for a couple of hours. On waking the discomfort had gone and the vision was amazing. I could see the TV for the first time very without glasses. On attending my first check up the morning after, I was told that I had healed so well that you would hardly know that it had been done and that I already had 20/20 vision and at this stage would only have gained about 80% of my vision. Well done to the eye clinic and to Professional Mortimer for making my dream come true.

I had Lasek (shaftsbury avenue) on on the 7th of August and today (3 weeks later) I have better than 20/20 vision with non of the side effects that the surgeons said I might get. Least to say that I'm very happy with the end results although I have to say that I wasn't expecting the amount of pain that I went through just after the op to be as much as it was. However this was only for a couple of hours and although the contacts they give you just after the op are uncomfortable they are taken out a few days later. When weighing up the odds its more than worth it.

I had inplantable contact lenses last Novemeber and have never looked back once. I've just had an eye test and my eye sight is perfect. The Rosen Eye Clinic - Manchester.

I had Lasik on 02/10/03 (2 days ago) and am absolutely delighted with the whole experience and outcome. I'm at work at the moment with better than 20/20 vision. My prescription was -9 in the left eye and -6 in the right and I have worn glasses and contacts since the age of 11, I'm now 29. Professor Mortimer performed my surgery, at the Shaftsbury avenue clinic and he was excellent. He was obviously very experienced in his field and explained realistic expectations and disscussed possible side-effects and potential problems without being frightening, in fact I felt very reassured after speaking to him.I was nervous about the proceedure because I was found to have larger pupils, which increases the risk of side effects such as halo's, ghosting and starbursts. Also, due to my prescription it was explained that I might have to undergo another lasik treatment to get the maximum effect. Thankfully, neither of these complications have occurred and my vision is now perfect. I am religiously using my eye drops and using the eye sheilds to sleep. I was offered valium prior to the proceedure, which I'm sure alot of people would find helpful, I declined this but was grateful for the sedative to sleep post proceedure as my eyes were beginning to water and be slightly uncomfortable. The nurse added some extra local anasthetic drops to keep me comfortable for the short journey home. Everybody was friendly and professional and all played their part in making my experience as uncomplicated and comfortable as possible, everything was explained clearly to me at every stage, which was very reassuring. Hopefully my recovery will be as simple as all the rest of the stages involved, and I'm following their clear guidelines to try to ensure no infection or wrinkling of the flap occurs. They have a very throrough follow up proceedure and a helpline which you can ring in emergencies if you feel you need to, so you are never alone with your symptoms. I'm looking forward to a bright future without my contacts/glasses and would recommend anybody considering it to go for it, it is amazingly simple to change your life.

Surgery Type : LASIK Surgery Location : Eye Clinic, 28 Renfield Street, GLASGOW Date and time : 29th September 2003 Prescription : -2.5 and –3.00 Tel : 0800 783 5555 Web : www.eyeclinicdirect.com Surgeon : Dr Rodney Eve Nurse or counsellor ( person who gets you ready for surgery ) : Lauren McGregor Ophthalmist : Emily McDonald Advisor :- Lorna McInnes ( In short - highly recommended - First class ) Thurday 25th September 2003 - Assessment Went for laser correction assessment today. Was seen by Lorna McInnes and Emily McDonald who were both very helpful and answered all my questions thoroughly ( They both must have been fed up with the quantity of questions I had ). Went about a year ago, so knew what to expect, but hearing all the bad press did not go ahead with the surgery. In my opinion, the assessment was just like an eye test but with a few additional tests, which were no problem. I was offered an appointment for this Monday of the Laser Correction, which I decided to take, less time for me to think about it and change my mind. Was not sure whether to have LAKIK or LASEK so decided to discuss this with the surgeon on the day. But I would prefer to have LASIK as it is supposed to be not as uncomfortable. Monday 29th September 2003 – Laser Correction Day Before the surgery Went for laser correction today. I was very apprehensive to say the least ( Cannot describe how I really felt ). I arrived at the clinic early and was shown into the waiting room and immediately put at ease by Karen. Some of the people who had appointments earlier in the day were still getting their surgery done and had to sit in the waiting room for a few minutes after they had had their treatment. This was a good idea because everyone gave excellent comments after the surgery, which made you feel more at ease. After they were all finished Lauren McGregor took me through to meet Dr Rodney Eve in the examination room so he could do a final check and ensure he was happy enough to go ahead with the procedure. His manner was excellent, very calming and helpful and we discussed the LAKIK or LASEK option. He said that I could chose which option I would like so I went with LAKIK. It was at this point I was given the option to take a sedative, which of course I did and was shown back into the waiting room for it to take effect whilst everyone else was seen. After everyone had been seen Lauren McGregor took me back through to a small room just outside the Laser Correction room where I was fitted with my green hat and slippers to wear in the Laser Correction room and my eyes were wiped clean. I was given my sleeping pills at this time to take when I got home. During the surgery She then took me into the Laser Correction room where there were 2 other people and Dr Eve. It looked just like a dentists surgery. You are allowed to hear what the laser will sound like when you come into the room so you know what to expect. I lay back in the chair and the procedure began. Lauren McGregor was by my side and held your hand for the entire duration of the procedure, which was very helpful. Dr Eve explained step by step the procedure, as he was about to do it, which puts you at ease. The procedure is exactly as they describe to you. Your left eye is covered with a patch, the upper and lower lid are held open by a spatula type thing, they cover your eye with an instrument, which then applies suction, the flap is cut and moved over and the laser is turned on. The flap is then repositioned, drops are applied to your eye and the spatulas are removed. The other eye is now done. I forgot to mention that drops to numb your eyes are applied but I can’t remember when. Throughout the whole process I felt no pain. The only part I felt a bit of discomfort was when the suction was applied and that was nothing to worry about at all. After the surgery Lauren McGregor then takes you back through to the examination room where Dr Eve examines your eyes to see that he is happy with them. Eye shields are then taped to your face to ensure that nothing can damage or contaminate your eyes. You are then led back into the waiting room where everyone is waiting with anticipation to see how it went. I noticed a difference straight after the surgery that my vision had improved but everyone is different. I left the clinic and was then taken home in the car. I just wanted to close my eyes all the way home, not that they were sore, I just couldn’t keep them opened. When I got home I took my sleeping tablet and went straight to bed at 13.30, falling to sleep very quickly and did not waken up till 18.30. I had something light to eat, took my other sleeping pill and then went back to bed. I did not waken up till 7.30 the next morning. Did not need any painkillers thankfully. Tuesday 30th September 2003 – Day After Laser Correction Woke up this morning with no pain. Returned to the clinic for my check-up. Had the eye shields removed and noticed a vast improvement in my vision, but it seamed to be clear then go a bit fuzzy, which I was told to expect. I was told that my eyesight was better than expected and that my eyes were looking healthy. Got my 3 types of drops for my eyes and made my appointment for Friday for my weeks check up. Used my drops as advised and using my artificial tears hourly, just to be on the safe side, do not want to have any pain if I can help it. My eyesight is getting better as the day goes on. Everything is so clear, cannot explain what a different it is already making. Wednesday 1st to Monday 6th October 2003 – 2nd to 7th Day After Laser Correction Still no pain and still can’t believe the difference in my vision. I cannot explain how different it feels. I feel my vision is now better then what it was when I was wearing my lenses or glasses. The novelty of not having to wear my glasses or contact lenses still has not worn off yet. I keep going to take my lenses out before I go to bed, as I am still not used to my sight being so good without glasses or lenses. Have had my week check up and everything has gone well. Vision is 20/20. Cannot recommend the Eye Clinic, 28 Renfield Street, GLASGOW or Dr Rodney Eve highly enough. All the staff I mentioned above are excellent but Dr Rodney Eve and Lauren McGregor are just wonderful.
Debbie
I would definitely encourage anybody thinking about laser treatment to go ahead with it. I am really pleased with my results. I have gone from -6.50 to -0.25 which is fantastic. Mr Aziz and all the staff at Manchester are great. I was a little negative early on in the year but following my enhancements I can honestly say I have no regrets. Feel free to email me if you wish.
