4. The Verdict
I am really happy with the results. Apart from the machine not working and the long wait, the staff at this Optimax were really nice, friendly and helpful, as was Dr Patel. I would recommend this Optimax. – Tina Gibson

Most patients we spoke to were happy with the service. However, the long waiting times and poor communication mean this clinic misses the top spots on the list of the best laser eye surgery clinics in the UK. Still, Optimax makes it into these top lists:

I have just returned from the one week post-op consultation. I still find it incredibly hard to focus on both far (like number plates) AND near (like computers/newspapers). Its because my left eye feels very blurry. Its been the same since the day after the op. I am 27 years old and was -6.25 in both eyes (with perfect close up sight). This is my eye test results as of today (1 week after op). R +.25 / -0.50 X 70 L + 0.50 / -0.50 X 135 As you can see, both short and long sight are now affected and it’s causing me great focusing difficulties which is a big discomfort. I was told by the optometrist that it will 'probably' improve slightly, but I don’t feel very confident as it’s been the same for this week from day 1 after the op. I asked the optometrist what happens if it does indeed stay this way, and was told if it does not indeed improve, then I will probably need glasses because of the focusing issues. Also, he says with my prescription now, it is incredibly hard to have corrective surgery. I am very depressed with this piece of news. I am not very happy as I feel I was much better off with specs + £1500 extra in my bank, but I suppose I have a ray of hope. I would very much like to hear if anybody else had similar results after 1 week, and whether they did indeed get better. I am very anxious and its seriously affecting my work (web design). Please contact me if you feel you can somehow help with my anxieties :) I would love to hear from people in a similar position. p.s my * rating will improve if my eyes do get better :)

I had Lasik done at the Edinburgh clinic on 25/1/03 and had my 1 month check up on 7/3/03. Whilst I can read the bottom line of the eye chart which would suggest a complete success, my eyes have been and still are very sensitive to artificial light and daylight and 1 month on, no sign of improvement. I decided to get the op done as I play a lot of competitive golf and the thought of being able to play without glasses was a big attraction. However, I almost feel like I still require glasses to play as the sharp focus I had with my glasses is not there. Similarly, working with my PC at work under the lights is the same and I find my eyes go out of focus very easily. Overall, I would have to say so far I am disappointed with the results and I have been asked to back in 2 months for a further check up.Both my check ups have been on a Friday at 4.45pm which suits me due to work commitments, however, I would probably advise against this slot as the opticians I have seen have been quite clearly in a rush to get finished. Happy to hear from anyone that has experienced similar problems.

I had LASIK on 27th Feb performed by Dr Patel in Finchley Road. I have had my one week post op chek up and been told that that day after my surgery, I had 0 in both eyes and that one week later my prescription was +0.25/+0.5 but that this would change again and take time to settle to a final prescription. I have been told that it takes at least a month for it to settle and someone else I know has been told that it can take up to six months. The operation itself is nothing to worry about, you can't feel a thing, but the week following it has been very stressful. My eyes (around the rim and under the lids) have been sore, but this comes and goes as does dryness. I also have some hazing, which I find is different depending on the kind of lighting in the room and can sometimes feel that my eyes are a bit strained (although again this comes and goes, I think this has something to do with the fluctuation they mention in the leaflet - get a bit of blurring). What I can't understand is why Doron has been told that she has reached her plateau after one week when I have been told that it can take over a month to settle down. I have also heard people say that the hazing can last for different periods of time(does this depend on how long you were lasered)? I took comfort from Neil's e-mail saying that you have to give it time but think that based on the variety of experiences written about here, that recovery time all boils down to the individual. One thing I would say is that I think it should be made clear to people considering this treatment that this is surgery and that you will need time to heal.

Optimax - Bristol Branch - treatment 10th April It is just over a month now since I had LASIK at the Bristol clinic with Dr Martiz.> The Dr himself was very quiet and didn't volunteer any information to me unless I asked about things which I thought was a bit unhelpful. The day of treatment itself was fine, I had an hours wait went in for 15 minutes, had both eyes done, waited for another 30minutes, had a check up and was out of the clinic. I have had a problems since due to not healing as quickly as most people. I had severe bruising and swelling in the eyes which caused me to have astigmatism. My sight is only now begining to improve and I have another aftercare in two weeks time with an actual surgeon due to my complications. All I can say is yes I am glad I had it done, BUT, don't expect to have instant sight. I work on a computer and it still goes a bit hazy towards the end of the day. If anyone wants to contact me, please do as I know there is a lack of information especially regarding the Bristol clinic. Good luck.

I had Lasik at Bristol Optimax on 12th May with Dr Martiz. I agree with the comments made by Mandy - he is very uncommunicative, and quite honestly I was terrified. I was in a state of shock at the end , and sobbed in the waiting room afterwards. He did reassure me that all had gone well at the post op check half an hour or so later, but I think he needs to speak louder and more often to calm patients down. I wasnt sure if I was doing what he wanted as I could hardly hear him. I was initially pleased with the result once I had calmed down, but I have had a severe deterioration in my left eye over the last few days. It is not to driving standard at the moment, and I am worried in case my right eye also deteriorates. Post op checks have shown no problems, but deterioration has been since last check. Right eye is fantastic, so far. I think one of the things that really threw me was going into the surgery itself with no specs on. I immediately felt threatened as I couldnt really see what was in the room, or who was there. I think it would be a good idea if you were shown the room in advance or allowed to go in with sight. The doctor should explain in advance what he is going to do and reassure throughout - there was none of that. I have not checked the doctors credentials. I think he is South African? At the moment I am worried about my left eye, but realise that it is early days. My next appt is not til mid june but I may go back earlier if it doesnt settle down. I also had to wait for nearly 2 hours for the surgery, which does nothing to calm the nerves. Having read many complimentary comments about the treatment at Optimax, I have to say I was very disappointed with the Bristol centre. I am reserving judgment as to whether it was all worth it. If anyone wishes to contact me I would be happy to provide further info as Mandy has offered.

Well what can I say? Had my aftercare appointment 6weeks on from the actual treatment and I am sad to say I only have 10/20 vision in both eyes. I thought they were improving but I guess I have just got used to not have perfect vision. I am really disappointed at the surgery. I can only get half way down the chart and am borderline on whether I can drive or not, dusk may be a problem. The doctor who saw me gave me a thorough eye test and said I had to go back in 2 months time. He said that I could still improve but since my check up the day after the surgery I don't think I have improved at all so what chance do I have at improving 3 months on? I would be really happy to hear from anyone who has had or who is having the same experience as me as to whether they did improve after such a long period of time. I really don't want enhancement as it is opening up the healing wound. I don't regret having it done but am disappointed at my recovery time as you hear so many people have 20/20 vision so soon after the surgery. Any one had/having the same experience as me? Please contact me. Thanks all.

i had epi lasek at birmingham clinic on 4th june the op itself was quick and just a little uncomfortable and a bit wierd i did feel a little rushed at the clinic and they dont seem to run to time ...either late or very early..... however im very pleased with the results my vision is better than it was with my contacts (-3.50, -3.25 with astigmatism). i was in agony for approx 6 hours after the procedure i found even the slightest light painfull however after 6 hours i was up and about making a cuppa ... the pain was still there but slightly more of a uncomfortable feeling than specific pain... now after four weeks i have slight dry eyes and have to wear sunglasses as my eyes are still light sensitive. i hated wearing glasses and was warned that i may have to wear reading glasses straight away however i can read fine .. i do find my eyes get tired if i spend too long on pc or reading... but i would like to say its best 800 quid i have ever spent i wished i had done it years ago .
