4. The Verdict
I am really happy with the results. Apart from the machine not working and the long wait, the staff at this Optimax were really nice, friendly and helpful, as was Dr Patel. I would recommend this Optimax. – Tina Gibson

Most patients we spoke to were happy with the service. However, the long waiting times and poor communication mean this clinic misses the top spots on the list of the best laser eye surgery clinics in the UK. Still, Optimax makes it into these top lists:

Had Epi-Lasek done at Optimax in Newcastle in March of this year and can't believe I didn't get it done sooner. Picked Optimax because of the good reviews on this site and they were great. One minor niggle was that as my surgery was scheduled just before Easter, I had to go to Leeds to get my bandage lenses taken out as Newcastle branch not open on Easter Saturday. Leeds branch were great too. I went for the cheaper surgery as decided that saving £1000 was worth it for a couple of days of pain! And it was very painful, although I had expected this as they tell you in the info pack that it will be painful. It was like having someone stab me in the eye for 2 days!!! Take the medication as it takes the edge off and I did have to use the anaestetic eye drops for when it was really bad but they really helped. I noticed a definite improvement in vision straightaway and could drive in 5 days and after 2 follow up appointments now have 20:20 vision. I did have problems with dry eyes on a night for the first month but had gel to put in and this soon cleared up. I can't praise the procedure, the staff and the surgeon enough. I have already recommended it to a friend who has had it done and she wishes she had it done sooner too. I'd say if your prescription is ok for the cheaper one and you can stand the pain save yourself £1000 as in the end it's worth it.

I HAVE FOUND THE TREATMENT TO BE EXCELLENT THE SURGEON DR HOE WAS BRILLIANT EXPLAINING EVERY PART OF THE PROCEDURE AS HE WAS OPERATING HE PUT ME AT EASE THE AFTER CARE NURSES WERE ALSO FANTASTIC EXPLAINING ANY QUESTIONS OR FEARS I HAD IT WAS WELL WORTH HAVING THE TREATMENT

I had laser treatment on both my eyes on 17th September 2008 at Optimax in Aberdeen and found the actual procedure painless...but with slight discomfort during the clamping process. Found it hard to stay still but Dr Osman is brilliant and reassured me throughout the entire operation. I was fairly short-sighted with a high astigmatism. I had some blurring in the left eye up until just recently and at my last appointment Dr Osman told me that he could not believe how well my eyes have improved since the last appointment. My eyes were also quite dry but I have never had any light sensitivity. Driving during the day has not been much of a problem for me, but night time driving was definitely out! I was told that I will need a further operation in my right eye to improve on the clarity of vision as my eyes are still a fraction short-sighted. Even with these minor hiccups I am happy with how my eyes have improved steadily.......and my life is vastly changed since having the operation. I have been looked after during my check ups and find all of the staff at Optimax to be wonderful and reassuring. I used to hate having my eyes tested because I once had a bad experience during my childhood when having my vision tested....and I think having my eyes lasered to improve my vision has in fact taken care of any 'phobias' I used to have! I actually regard the staff at Optimax as friends now....and would recommend such a procedure. If I can do this....anyone can!

Wow... it's now less than 24hrs after my surgery and I feel fantastic. Had my surgery at Optimax in Manchester with Dr Madhusudhan at 6pm last night. I was told about the streamy, stinging eyes by others but I haven't had anything. Just wore my sun glasses and watched a bit of TV then went to bed. I can honestly saw that I'm amazed with the surgery. I was petrified going in but all the staff at Manchester were great and the surgeon really reassuring. It was over within 5 mins and I didn't feel a thing, in fact I was amazed when the suregon said I was done... i thought he'd only just lasered my flaps to start the surgery! All you see if a twinkly red light that you focus on and you smell a bit of burning but over all I felt more uncomfortable when I had a tooth out at the dentist! Can see perfectly with just a little haze which I'm told is normal. Have had no pain what so ever and I'm ok to drive now! My prescription was -3.50 with a slight astigmatism in one eye. My research before hand told me that although with Lasik there is a few more surgical procedure to cut the flap etc... the recovery is a lot more quicker and I haven't had the slightest pain at all. Can't understand why I didn't have it sooner!

From the minute I stepped in the door, I was treated like a special person. All my concerns were dealt with professionally and I felt comfortable and re-assured. And the after-care is second to none. I have now enjoyed perfect eyesight for 10 years - having been -7.75 in both eyes. It's like a miracle has happened!

I had my eyes lazered some time ago. It was the BEST thing and changed my life from day one. I have recommended it to everyone I know. I was lucky not to have pain, or any problems. I could not recommend Dr Patel at Optimax more highly. I was 50 when I had it done - and I had one eye fully corrected and one eye under corrected and I can read perfectly. I only need magnification for very close work - sewing or putting on make up - easily resolved with a magnifying mirror.

24 hours after my treatment and its nothing short of a miracle!!!! I simply cannot believe it!!! If you've thought about it, don't hold back and get it done!!!! Done in Optimax, Belfast

I do wear glasses today to correct my astigmatism and although I decided not to go ahead with my surgery after the free consultation, I rate Optimax, Finchley Road 5* for the following reasons: 1. The customer service was excellent; I was very well taken care of. 2. The reception room was large and airy with all the normal conveniences but it also had a video playing on one of the screens that explained the surgical procedure this I have not found anywhere else 3. They are open about their surgeons qualification and their experience and you might even be able to choose who you want 4. The optometrist was excellent. She gave me realistic expectations of the surgery and told me about Presbyopia which could increase after the surgery as I was already showing early signs and because of my age. 5. They promised to beat any written quotation I had from other providers and they did! 6. There was no hard sell, and I did not feel under any pressure to commit myself. 7. The optometrist and personal adviser who saw me were very patient with me and allowed me to ask all my questions. All in all it was a much more pleasant experience than I had come to get used to. I also feel the eye examination was more thorough and neither Optical Express nor Ultralase ever mentioned to me that because I had the early stages of Presbyopia there was a high possibility I would need glasses soon for close reading or computer work after the surgery. This was a big show stopper for me because I do all my work on the computer. I wonder if that was why it was ‘missed’ by the other providers.

I had my treatment on 14th April at Optimax in Hove. My Surgeon was Dr Wilbert Hoe. Due to my age (mid 40's) I was recommended to have Monovision, my non dominant eye slightly under corrected to allow for Presbyopia, the stiffening of the lens inside your eye as you age. The reason for this, if both eyes are fully corrected, it's likely that you will have good distance vision, but may have to wear glasses to read. My dominant eye was treated to give good distance vision & the other eye left slightly short sighted to allow for close up work. I tried this out first by wearing different strength contact lenses. I am absoloutly delighted with the results, I've had no problems adjusting to this & hopefully it will be a very long time before I need reading glasses. I chose Optimax Hove after a good friend had her surgery there, she was delighted with the results. But what did sway me was the experience of Dr Hoe, he's treated 15318 at Optimax since 2002. He is also an Associate Specialist at the Corneo-Plastic Unit at East Grinstead a specialist Eye Hospital. I have written a blog about my experience www.optimaxreview.blogspot.com, it will give you an idea of what the treatment was really like. I wouldn't hesitate to recommend Optimax Hove, the staff are friendly and helpful and I felt in safe hands with Dr Hoe. He also operates in the Croydon branch.
