I’m very happy with my laser treatment. There’s nothing to worry about – there’s no pain, and I would recommend it to anybody. The aftercare at Optical Express is also very good. I just wish i had done it years ago. – Philip Lavelle
Optical Express uses world leading technology, and their laser platform – the VISX S4IR – delivers safe, accurate and precise results. Fun fact: Optical Express is the only vision correction provider to invest in the iFS150 intraLASE in each of its clinics – the same technology that led to NASA backing laser eye surgery for astronauts in 2007.
Over 99% of Optical Express patients achieved 20/20 vision or better following treatment, according to a study carried out in June 2017.
With over 25 years’ experience in eye care, Optical Express boasts excellent surgical outcomes, and has invested £400 million in technology to offer advanced methods for vision correction.
Optical Express has 128 clinics in the UK alone – far more than any other eye surgery provider. Its locations include London, Liverpool, Manchester, Leeds, Glasgow, Edinburgh, and Dublin, with many more situated in all corners of the country.

Laser Eye Surgery
Laser eye surgery is a simple procedure that can correct your vision in a matter of minutes. Optical Express offers the most popular types: LASIK and LASEK (if you are not suitable for the surgical LASIK).
In both treatments, a cool beam advanced laser reshapes the cornea (the surface of your eye). Optical Express uses a technology called iDesign, which is based on Wavefront technology and takes thousands of eye measurements to produce the best results.
Lens Replacement
Optical Express has 20 years’ experience in lens replacement surgery. This surgery is a popular treatment for people with long distance vision, short distance vision, and even cataracts.
An eye consultant can help you decide which surgery best suits your needs:
- Refractive lens exchange (RLE) – This surgery replaces the natural lens with a synthetic intraocular lens (IOL) implant.
- Phakic IOL – This type of IOL is an alternative to laser eye surgery for patients with strong prescriptions.
- YAG laser treatment – YAG laser capsulotomy is a non-invasive procedure used to treat refractive former lens exchange patients whose vision starts to fade over the years.
Cataract Surgery
Optical Express performs the highest number of cataract surgeries – after the NHS, according to its website.
Cataracts are small, blurry patches on your eyes, giving you cloudy vision. Cataract surgery involves removing your damaged lens, and replacing it with a premium synthetic one for sharper near and distance vision.
Aftercare
Optical Express custom-fits its aftercare plan to every patient. This plan includes any medication that will aid the healing process, optometrist-led follow-up appointments, and an out-of-hours medical helpline.
Patients receive 12 months’ continued care as standard, and Optical Express recommends annual examinations to maintain your eye health.
Safety Record
All surgical procedures carry a degree of risk. However, laser eye surgery has an impressive success rate, and is the most popular elective surgery in the world.
99.2% of patients achieved at least 20|20 vision following surgery at Optical Express, based on a study of 190,231 Optical Express patients with the most common prescriptions. That’s why this eye clinic promises 20|20 vision or your money back.
Just be aware that the risks increase the more complicated the surgery. Optical Express will provide a screening service to check whether you are suitable for surgical treatment.
4. The Verdict

Peter
Had my Surgery on 14/06/08, only a few day ago and I'm really happy with the results so far but my eyes are to settle over the next few weeks, I found the whole experience OK actually wasn't nervous and was talked through everything, worst thing i can say is that i wasn't seen until an hour after my appointment time but who really cares not like you can do much after having it done. The staff were great and told me exactly what was going to happen after the surgery and i did as they said and went to bed for a few hours, once i got up i was amazed at how good my vision was, slight halo effect but nothing too bad. I'm now following and taking my drops as told and looking forward to finally finding out what my eye grading is. I will update this as i go through my checks, the whole experience was painless and i was only sore for a couple hours after but once i rest was grand. I would def recommend this to anyone. Thanks Peter

I had my treatment at Optical Express in Southampton. I have worn glasses / contacts for 17 years, for the last 2 years I have suffered from a series of eye problems caused by contact lense wear & so have been wearing my glasses 80% of the time. I was -3.5 in each eye with -1 astigmatism. I have always thought about laser eye surgery but I am really squeamish & because of the problems I have had with contacts, & being allergic to just about anything that goes near my eye I felt nervous about playing around with my sight. However a girl at work had Laser Eye surgery & after seeing her go through the procedure I decided to go for a consultation. I was delighted when they told me I could have the procedure done, but also left with a big decision to make! After talking to people, I found lots of people who knew people that had had it done, & every review I read was really positive & so I made the decision to go for it!! I was really anxious the few days before surgery and nearly backed out!!! However I had absolutely nothing to worry about, although a little uncomfortable & scary the surgery was painless and over in max 15 mins. As soon as I opened my eyes I could see the difference, I couldn't stop staring at all the posters I could now read!!! My eyes streamed all the way home, but when I got in I slept for an hour & when I woke my vision was even clearer. I slept again later on in the day but by the evening I was watching TV and texting everyone & anyone to tell them about my new eyes!!! I took painkillers throughout the day but by the evening these were no longer required, I had absolutely no pain at any time. The next day I went for my post op and already had better than 20/20 vision!!! Amazing!! I have been for my weekly check up and still better than 20/20 vision and all healing nicely. I have some night glare but I believe this is normal to experience for sometime until my eyes have settled. Also I bruise quite easily & have a big red patch on each eye but this is fading everyday and does not hurt, I have been told this is just burst blood vessels from the suction ring, again perfectly normal, everyone has differing degrees of bruising. Other than that there is no sign that anything has been done, & I am still absolutely amazed at how quick the recovery time is. I am over the moon with my news eyes & cannot stop staring at everything & everyone!!! I would add that the branch in Southampton is very busy and I was kept waiting for a long time for a couple of my appointments, the later in the day the appointment, the longer they seem to be behind! I would suggest morning appointments as my surgery was booked in for 9.30 & I was out by 11.15 so no hanging around that day, thank goodness!! Thank you to all the staff at Optical Express in Southampton, despite the waiting times they were all so friendly & were very apologetic if they were running behind. Big thanks to Alison my counsellor and Dr Joanne McGrath my surgeon & all the nurses that reassured me during surgery!! If your thinking about having laser eye surgery I would highly recommend Optical Express, go for it's, it's changed my life!!!

Having worn soft contact lenses for 8 years, I've experienced all the inconveniences and discomforts that come with them; from drying out and popping out to getting stuck at the back of my eyes. I had always thought about getting laser surgery one day in the future but never got round to doing anything about it. Until recently that is! Last week, I had both eyes corrected using LASIK Wavefront & Intralase at the Optical Express in Shaftesbury Avenue, London. I can honestly say it is the best thing I've ever had. I can now see better than 20/20, although I do get halos at night (have been told this will improve as my eyes heal). The procedure itself was between 10-15 minutes long and was surprisingly painless. I was very nervous before and during the op but my surgeon reassured me making me relaxed. I could clearly see everything in the room right after the op. The after-care has been superb, all the staff are extremely friendly and attentive. I truly recommend this treatment to anyone who wears contacts/glasses and enjoys playing sports.. I cannot wait to start swimming, cycling and playing rugby again with my NEW eyes! Seeing the flaps in the cornea being lifted and placed back again after the procedure is an incredible experience I will never ever forget :)

Excellant service. I had a very low prescription 0.50 in right eye and 1.00 in left. The charges are worked out on a scale depending on prescription strength so mine were on the cheapest end. The consulatation was great and I booked for surgery there and then. I had to wait 6 weeks for a Friday slot and every day my glasses seemed a huge burden! My clinic is BLUEWATER. in Kent and surgeon Wayne Crewe- Brown. Very clean and organised. Soon the day arrived and I was at the surgery around two hours. Very quick and painless, although the suction feeling when the laser cut the flap was a little uncomfortable a bit like the dentist. This lasted 27 seconds. The laser was very quick and I just had to stare at the orange light. Afterwards my eyes felt heavy and watery but after a sleep wearing the sleep goggles ( supplied) and using the drops I felt great. Today after 24 hours I have 20/20 vision and can see detail I never saw with glasses. I am wearing "welder type" protective goggles I bought to ensure my eyes are kept totally clean and protected and to make sure I don,t accidentially touch my eyes. It is vital to ensure the three types of drops are used. Thoroughly recommend Optical Express. Good Value and good service.

I just want to send my grateful thanks to all at Optical Express on Minshull Street especially to the surgeon Dr Waseem Aziz. Less than 24 hours after surgery I have perfect vision thanks to Dr Aziz's brilliant expertise. Thank you.

Everything was done in Inverness. The treatment was quick and efficient and it has changed my life for the better. I noticed a difference a few hours after the procedure after a short nap.

I arrived at the Cheltenham branch at 9am and was straight in to the surgery and was all sorted in 30 mins with the follow up check I was out by 10am. No pain at all even afterwards, just a little light blurring but this was gone after a 3 hour snooze. The staff were brilliant and very informative. It was worth every penny.
Gordon Cruickshank
The location of the clinic in Inverness is ideal for me as I thought I would need to go to Aberdeen or Glasgow. I was apprehensive the night before but the procedure was quick and the results the next day were amazing! The price was a little more than expected but worth every penny!
Steven Meredith
I would definitely recommend this procedure to anyone. I was very nervous and apprehensive before my treatment and this was mainly because I was unsure of exactly what was going to happen. I knew roughly what the treatment would involve but it was the actual process of doing the treatment that scared me, however I can safely say it was painless, quick and very easy to go through. It lasted probably no more than 5 minutes and the after-care was excellent. Once the anaesthetic had worn off I did feel some slight discomfort, however as recommended I went home and slept for a while and when I woke up I was fine. I had the treatment at around 11.30 on the day and by 5 o clock that night, my sight was fine. I've had my check ups and my vision is now better than 20/20, far better than I ever was with glasses and contact lenses, and without the hassle. I had all my consultations done at the Meadowhall site and the staff there are excellent. They explained and worked through everything with me, ensuring I chose the best package that was right for me. Once again, anyone who is in 2 minds about having the treatment done I would say go for it, you will find the benefits so rewarding.

Went to the clinic in Sheffield Medowhall and things didn’t seem right from the start. They mixed my appointments with others and during the consultation he realized they had the wrong patient records in front of him. Advised me on Lasik and was booked at Nottingham clinic for surgery, however when arrived they had mixed up the appointments I was informed and they were unable to do the surgery. I was disappointed and went to Ultralase same day and they did an examination and said that I was not even suitable for LASIK as I had very dry eyes and thin cornea and were surprised that this was not picked by Optical express. Wrote a complaint letter to Optical express and not heard from them since!
