Laser Eye Surgery
Laser eye surgery is a simple procedure that can correct your vision in a matter of minutes. Optical Express offers the most popular types: LASIK and LASEK (if you are not suitable for the surgical LASIK).
In both treatments, a cool beam advanced laser reshapes the cornea (the surface of your eye). Optical Express uses a technology called iDesign, which is based on Wavefront technology and takes thousands of eye measurements to produce the best results.
Lens Replacement
Optical Express has 20 years’ experience in lens replacement surgery. This surgery is a popular treatment for people with long distance vision, short distance vision, and even cataracts.
An eye consultant can help you decide which surgery best suits your needs:
- Refractive lens exchange (RLE) – This surgery replaces the natural lens with a synthetic intraocular lens (IOL) implant.
- Phakic IOL – This type of IOL is an alternative to laser eye surgery for patients with strong prescriptions.
- YAG laser treatment – YAG laser capsulotomy is a non-invasive procedure used to treat refractive former lens exchange patients whose vision starts to fade over the years.
Cataract Surgery
Optical Express performs the highest number of cataract surgeries – after the NHS, according to its website.
Cataracts are small, blurry patches on your eyes, giving you cloudy vision. Cataract surgery involves removing your damaged lens, and replacing it with a premium synthetic one for sharper near and distance vision.
Aftercare
Optical Express custom-fits its aftercare plan to every patient. This plan includes any medication that will aid the healing process, optometrist-led follow-up appointments, and an out-of-hours medical helpline.
Patients receive 12 months’ continued care as standard, and Optical Express recommends annual examinations to maintain your eye health.
Safety Record
All surgical procedures carry a degree of risk. However, laser eye surgery has an impressive success rate, and is the most popular elective surgery in the world.
99.2% of patients achieved at least 20|20 vision following surgery at Optical Express, based on a study of 190,231 Optical Express patients with the most common prescriptions. That’s why this eye clinic promises 20|20 vision or your money back.
Just be aware that the risks increase the more complicated the surgery. Optical Express will provide a screening service to check whether you are suitable for surgical treatment.
4. The Verdict

I had lasik surgery at Optical Express in Southampton's West Quay yesterday (August 25). I have just been for my check-up and everything is fine. My surgeon was Mr Wayne Crewe Brown and I was short-sighted with a prescription of roughly -3.5 in both eyes. I also had fairly bad astigmatism. I was extremely nervous on the day of the operation and briefly thought about making a run for it, but I'm so glad I didn't. The operation itself is much easier than going to the dentist. It is totally painless and very quick. I had been especially nervous of the part of the operation where the flap is created, but this part was over before I could process what was happening to me. The laser part itself was fine - I just had to stare at a flashing red light while someone counted down the seconds. It's impossible to blink as your eyelids are taped back, although you do still make the reflex movements to blink. There was a comforting hand at the top of my head throughout the procedure and then it was all over. I tottered back into the waiting room where around eight other patients were waiting to see how I fared. (I was the first one in). My eyes were blurry, but I could still see quite well. After about 15 minutes, they became slightly gritty, but that's as bad as it got and it was no where near as painful as getting an eyelash in your eye, or grit under a contact lense. I was driven home and for the rest of the day, I rested in bed with the radio on and kept my eyes closed as much as possible. I also kept on the goggles they provide you with just in case one of my children poked me in the eye! I didn't sleep much that night mainly because I was paranoid about rubbing my eye, but today, my vision is even better. This morning, I could see the TV clearly, but found it difficult to read small writing on the screen clearly. This afternoon, I'm finding it easier and easier to focus, probably as the swelling goes down. I'm not suffering with dry eye at all and hadn't been using my comfort drops much - but when I went back for my check, I was told to use them as much as every hour as my eyes would be drier than normal even if I couldn't feel it. Finally, I would like to thank everyone at Southampton Optical Express. They were friendly, professional and kind. Today at my 24 hour check many of them stopped to see how I was and how my sight was. It's so strange. Yesterday, I couldn't see the time on the radio clock three feet from my bed and now I have 20/20 vision for the first time in 30 years!

I have just had Lasik Treatment at Optical Express, West Quay Southampton (Friday 26th August). I had been thinking of having this procedure for about two years before actually getting enough nerve even to go for the consultation. the staff at Southampton are very friendly and make you feel at ease from the moment you walk through the doors. After having the consultation, which includes all tests etc...(my prescription was -1.75 / -1.25 and i have larger than average pupils) i made the decision to have the treatment and booked in for 1 month later, all my questions had been answered and doubts had gone. On the day of treatment i was extremely nervous, but as soon as you walk into the waiting room you meet other people also having the treatment, so you are not alone! .. again the staff make you feel relaxed. The surgeon i had was Mr Wayne-Crewe Brown, he made me feel totally relaxed and answered any last questions i had, from that moment on i was totally relaxed about the surgery. During the surgery i felt absolutely nothing - no pain, no discomfort, and if you want someone to hold your hand they do!!! I saw lots of different colours, Smelt different smells and that was it, they talk to you all the way through. Afterwards you just look like you've been crying non-stop for an hour!, but there is still no pain, your eyes just feel a bit gritty and tired. It's now the next day, and after sleeping with my 'guards' on (very sexy!) and putting my eye drops in, i have just had my next day check up - I can see everything sooooooo clearly, my vision is better than 20/20 - television, car number plates, leaves on the tree's, road signs, people across the road! - unbelievable for just 1 day later and still no pain whatsoever. Dont hold back if you are thinking of having this done, i wish i had done it sooner, the results are amazing.

I had Lasek surgery in May and have been discharged today 27/8/2005. Its hard to describe how my life has changed since having the surgery it is so wonderfull to not be dependant on glasses I have just returned from holiday and it was great to go to the beach for the first time without glasses! I had my surgery done in Birmingham after 15 years of dithering about I finaly took the plunge I only wish I had done it sooner It was painless and just a week or so of discomfort mainly the first three days from wearing the bandage lenses after they were removed it was a reliefe over the next couple of weeks my eyes healed at different speeds but they both got there in the end and I now have better than 20 20 vision. the staff were brilliant and the post op care is excellent I would advise any one thinking about having laser treatment to go for it its worth every penny!

I was short sighted and needed reading glasses. After 40 years of needing glasses/contact lenses, I decided to take the plunge. I had LASEK treatment on 25 August at Southampton West Quay. I had wanted LASIK because it seemed less painful but Mr.Crew-Brown advised I had LASEK. The treatment itself was painless and although I was very uncomfortable for about 3 days (very gritty, dry eyes)I did not have any actual pain. 12 days on, I still have dry eyes, but the staff at Optical Express (especially Jo) have been very helpful in advising me how to ease the dryness. I'm back at work and finding computer work easy without reading glasses. Small print is OK most of the time but if I'm tired, I need to put on reading glasses. My biggest problem is habit. Every morning I reach for my glasses!. If you are considering treatment - just go for it, its well worth it and the "Biggles" goggles for bed time are very sexy :-) Overall, I have found the staff at Southampton excellent, friendly and very professional

I had surgery on Thursday last week and I can't believe how simple it all seemed. The people at Optical Express in Newcastle were all very friendly and informed. The surgery seemed to last about 1 or 2 minutes per eye and I was sitting drinking a cup of tea straight afterwards. (lots of tea / coffee on offer!) I cannot fault my experience at all and if you are reading this whilst considering having the treatment, GO AND BOOK YOUR CONSULTATION! It makes such a difference to your life. The surgery is so easy with no pain at all. I feel daft not having done it sooner! Thanks again to everyone in Newcastle! Bri

I had Lasek Surgery at Birmingham 2 weeks ago. Was very nervous for the surgery, but, it was over very quickly and pain free. Slight discomfort the following day and watery eyes. 24hrs after the lenses were taken out i could see quite well. Was driving 1 week after the surgery. I should have done this ages ago. My vision is still improving, got 20/20 vision.

Fantastic: after nearly forty years of wearing either glasses or contact lenses to correct my distance vision I took the plunge and went for a consultation at Optical Express in Glasgow. Jonathan Dry and the rest of the staff could not have been more helpful and knowledgeable and it was a relief to know that my eyes were suitable for LASIK correction after all the tests had been carried out. The operation itself was so quick and painless that I was still wondering when it would start after it was all finished. I was 'done' late on a Wednesday afternoon and such was the recovery rate that I was able to travel [unaided] by train at 08.00 the following morning to the city centre for the first post-op review. Everything has gone incredibly smoothly and I just wish that I had known about the treatment years ago. Would I recommend it to others who may be put off by the fear of having people mess about with their eyes? A definite yes to that question. Amazing how one later hears, after the vent, of others who have considered having Laser treatment. One unlucky girl in the office went through all the tests only to discover that her eyes were incompatable for treatment, very disappointed; another has just had LASEK on one eye only and found the post-op recovery was not as quick having suffered the 'gritty eye' feeling for several days compared to my LASIK one night only. A third colleague had 'thought about' treatment but had considered it would be painful - after hearing my experience she has now had the tests, is compatable and is considering the price payment options at present. The freedom from glasses for distance is truly amazing, the operation was completely painless and I would recommend LASIK at Op Ex to anyone who is currently considering it.
