1. Optical Express Laser Eye Surgery Review

I’m very happy with my laser treatment. There’s nothing to worry about – there’s no pain, and I would recommend it to anybody. The aftercare at Optical Express is also very good. I just wish i had done it years ago. – Philip Lavelle

Optical Express uses world leading technology, and their laser platform – the VISX S4IR – delivers safe, accurate and precise results. Fun fact: Optical Express is the only vision correction provider to invest in the iFS150 intraLASE in each of its clinics – the same technology that led to NASA backing laser eye surgery for astronauts in 2007.

Over 99% of Optical Express patients achieved 20/20 vision or better following treatment, according to a study carried out in June 2017.

With over 25 years’ experience in eye care, Optical Express boasts excellent surgical outcomes, and has invested £400 million in technology to offer advanced methods for vision correction.

Optical Express has 128 clinics in the UK alone – far more than any other eye surgery provider. Its locations include London, Liverpool, Manchester, Leeds, Glasgow, Edinburgh, and Dublin, with many more situated in all corners of the country.

True, it was an expensive operation, but I spent £500 a year on contact lenses and optician appointments – I see it as an investment! – Dave Reyner

Laser eye surgery at Optical Express costs from just £595, or from £1,995 for lens replacement surgery. Of course, these prices depend on the treatment you choose, as well as your prescription, so you’ll want to pop in for a free consultation to get a tailored quote.

Optical Express is one of the cheapest laser eye surgery clinics in the UK. Its prices are well below average, compared to over 70 leading eye clinics and hospitals nationwide.

Laser Eye Surgery

Laser eye surgery is a simple procedure that can correct your vision in a matter of minutes. Optical Express offers the most popular types: LASIK and LASEK (if you are not suitable for the surgical LASIK).

In both treatments, a cool beam advanced laser reshapes the cornea (the surface of your eye). Optical Express uses a technology called iDesign, which is based on Wavefront technology and takes thousands of eye measurements to produce the best results.

Lens Replacement

Optical Express has 20 years’ experience in lens replacement surgery. This surgery is a popular treatment for people with long distance vision, short distance vision, and even cataracts.

An eye consultant can help you decide which surgery best suits your needs:

  • Refractive lens exchange (RLE) – This surgery replaces the natural lens with a synthetic intraocular lens (IOL) implant.
  • Phakic IOL – This type of IOL is an alternative to laser eye surgery for patients with strong prescriptions.
  • YAG laser treatment – YAG laser capsulotomy is a non-invasive procedure used to treat refractive former lens exchange patients whose vision starts to fade over the years.

Cataract Surgery

Optical Express performs the highest number of cataract surgeries – after the NHS, according to its website.

Cataracts are small, blurry patches on your eyes, giving you cloudy vision. Cataract surgery involves removing your damaged lens, and replacing it with a premium synthetic one for sharper near and distance vision.

Aftercare

Optical Express custom-fits its aftercare plan to every patient. This plan includes any medication that will aid the healing process, optometrist-led follow-up appointments, and an out-of-hours medical helpline.

Patients receive 12 months’ continued care as standard, and Optical Express recommends annual examinations to maintain your eye health.

Safety Record

All surgical procedures carry a degree of risk. However, laser eye surgery has an impressive success rate, and is the most popular elective surgery in the world.

99.2% of patients achieved at least 20|20 vision following surgery at Optical Express, based on a study of 190,231 Optical Express patients with the most common prescriptions. That’s why this eye clinic promises 20|20 vision or your money back.

Just be aware that the risks increase the more complicated the surgery. Optical Express will provide a screening service to check whether you are suitable for surgical treatment.

4. The Verdict

I can highly recommend Optical Express. They are very professional, and the procedure was pain free. The best thing now is I can see very well without glasses – and it was only done 3 weeks ago. – Elaine Gibson

I had Lasik on the 28th October at Milton Keynes. Having been for tests with Boots and booked treatment which was then cancelled, rebooked, cancelled I was worried about being let down by another company, but Optical Express were fantastic. From start to finish nothing was too much trouble. They explained everything at the initial consultation and again on the day. The wait before the surgery was long and nerve wracking, but the Valium does help! Mr Jain and the surgical team explained what they were doing at every stage. It is a surreal experience but to be able to see without glasses or contacts in less than 24 hours is amazing and I would advise anyone who is still unsure to go to Optical Express.

Had my LASIK in Glasgow on Saturday, 30th October and I have to say it is the best thing I have ever done. The staff were so friendly and helpful and could not do more to put you at ease. Did as I was told and went home for a sleep afterwards and within 3 hours could see perfectly again. Would recommend it to anyone who is thinking aobut it.

I had my treatment at Manchester on Friday 3rd September this year. I had already had my assessment completed in Bristol in July and found out that I had 'large pupils' so had to go to Manchester for the procedure! Having consulted this site I was expecting a sedative of some kind on the day, but no apparently I had to experience it stone cold sober!! Maybe I didn't look nervous enough. Anyway, I was terrified during the procedure so very glad that it didn't take very long at all. I walked into the room at 3.20pm and by 3.45pm I had been checked out, had a cup of tea and was on my way back to the hotel. My eyes felt like someone had dumped a truckful of sand into them and I was very frustrated by the desire to rub them. I slept as much as I could and by 3 hours later I felt fine and could watch TV. I woke up the next morning with no pain and 20/20 vision. I have had no pain whatsoever, and I was very impressed with the aftercare as I had a minor complication that was very carefully monitored to make sure if it developed into a problem it would be caught early (it didn't). two months on my only side effect is the occasional need for drops when I've had a long day. My vision is perfect and although the procedure itself was scary it was well worth it to wake up able to see clearly everyday. The staff were excellent and their support staff are really friendly and helpful.

I had lasek surgery at the milton keynes branch on wednesday the 27th oct by Dr Jain. It was a very nerve wracking experience, but the surgery itself its painfree. but i must say that a day or 2 afterwards my eyes became very sore and light sensitive so beware!! you are much better off just closing your eyes, trust me! after the contact lenses get taken out you can practically see 10 times better, but takes a few more days to stabilise. my eyes are now very close to 20/20 vision and am very happy with the results. thank you optical express for making me see out of my own eyes and not designer ones!

Having worn specs for the best part of 30 years, I was really looking forward to having this treatment and I was not disapointed! I am delighted with the results and can't praise the staff at the Glasgow Clinic enough. The whole proceedure took less than 5 mins but it has changed my life forever. The most amazing thing is waking up in the mornings and being able to see my alarm clock without having to put my glasses on, something which many people take for granted.

22 Nov 2004

I had my Lasik done just less than 3 months ago at the Glasgow clinic, it has been wonderful, I would urge anyone who is considering it to go for it. I had very bad short sight, with my right eye having quite a bad astigmatism. I had been refused treatment (on the day) by another clinic and thought I wasn't able to have any surgery done, however I went to the Eye Clinic (where I have had my glasses and contact lenses from for years!) and they gave me the go ahead! I was very nervous, the sedative helped slightly and it was over very quickly, the cutting of the flap was the worst part as the sensation is odd. Dr Bothya was very good as were the surgical staff (thanks to the person whose hand I held!) In fact all the staff at the clinic were excellent, very positive, encouraging and supportive. The price was much cheaper than I was going to pay the first clinic (about £800!)I still can't believe how well I can see after 20 years of glasses and lenses, wish I had done it years ago. I really could see nothing without them. I've been extremely lucky so far, no problems at all. Back for my three month check up on 9 December so fingers crossed. I can't recommend the Glasgow clinic more highly. Thank you.

Had my surgery on the 28th September 2004. I was nervous. I was hungover. I did not know what to expect and having been a salesman previously my initial thoughts were, "Here we go again". Yes there are pointers that could be addressed but hey! Trust these people if they say they can operate, you will be the one to benefit. Litigation is the key nowadays and no-one wants to fail, just like Optical Express. I was recommended by a friend to the service so it was easy but I knew that at 48 years old I had to take a positive step towards improving my vision. Don´t sit on the fence. Be brave, go and get it if you can! I wanted to be sure it had worked before documenting this resume. Now I´m convinced, I hope I have persuaded you to take that first step. By the way my surgery was completed at the capital of England, Northumberland Road, Newcastle upon Tyne. Okay the jokes over.

25 Nov 2004

48hrs after surgery with Dr George and his fantastic team in Birmingham I feel like I want to tell the world how wonderful LASIK surgery is! Like you I read all these reports before treatment so you 'sort of know' whats going to happen. It is still a bit scary on the day. The pain is no worse than a visit to the dentist, its just a bit weird! I was refused first time because my eyes had not settled down enough after wearing contacts. It says in the documentation 1 week of no contacts before surgery I would say TRIPLE that time to be sure of doing the surgery on the day. The coolest thing was my Optical Express surgery nurse had already had LASIK so knew exactly what I was going through! The day after I was 2 lines below 20/20 and no pain at all - freaky. Any sharper and it would be something out of a Marvel comic! Aftercare is great, they are completely professional and kind. My Optomotrist(?) commented on the quality of Dr Georges work - I feel reborn. Insist on him and the Birmingham team and you will be fine. p.s. It also make you consider how lucky you are to have sight (of any sort when you are under the laser). Dont hesitate - book it!

25 Nov 2004

Had LASIK wavefront with -3.50 and astigmatism, one day after surgery I now have 20/15 vision better then 20/20! I had Mr Osama Giledi - M.B.B.CH, FRCS who coincidently also works at the BEST eye clinic in the country 'The centre for sight' with the only Intralasik machine in the UK 'Basically it cuts the flap with a laser as opposed to the hands of an careful surgeon'’, if you got nearly £5000 or so go there, otherwise fork out £2000 and go to Optical Express (Shaftsbury avenue - London) with Mr Osama Giledi The VISX 4 wavefront machine Mr Osama Giledi uses has the latest software update and appears to have done the trick no wonders. I have had minimal discomfort and the actual procedure was over in less than 40 seconds per eye, no reported problems thus far! Would recommend to anyone. Thank you Mr Giledi

Had my LASIK in Glasgow on Saturday, 20th November with Dr S Boytha, I was going to go for surgery 2 years ago but wimped out!!I'm so happy I decided this time round just to go for it. The rsults are fantastic, I had 20/20 vision NEXT DAY and could see straight after surgery, whicj in its self was painfree and the staff were great at putting you at ease! I went back to the hotal and slept for a few hour, when i woke I was amazed, i went for supper(still wearing my sun spec.... and yes there was loads of weird looks!!!)and felt fine. I had my weeks consultation today and everything looks fine, just a bit of dryness but thats totaly normal! Ive already been convicing friends etc to go for it!!
