1. Optical Express Laser Eye Surgery Review
I’m very happy with my laser treatment. There’s nothing to worry about – there’s no pain, and I would recommend it to anybody. The aftercare at Optical Express is also very good. I just wish i had done it years ago. – Philip Lavelle
Optical Express uses world leading technology, and their laser platform – the VISX S4IR – delivers safe, accurate and precise results. Fun fact: Optical Express is the only vision correction provider to invest in the iFS150 intraLASE in each of its clinics – the same technology that led to NASA backing laser eye surgery for astronauts in 2007.
Over 99% of Optical Express patients achieved 20/20 vision or better following treatment, according to a study carried out in June 2017.
With over 25 years’ experience in eye care, Optical Express boasts excellent surgical outcomes, and has invested £400 million in technology to offer advanced methods for vision correction.
Optical Express has 128 clinics in the UK alone – far more than any other eye surgery provider. Its locations include London, Liverpool, Manchester, Leeds, Glasgow, Edinburgh, and Dublin, with many more situated in all corners of the country.

Laser Eye Surgery
Laser eye surgery is a simple procedure that can correct your vision in a matter of minutes. Optical Express offers the most popular types: LASIK and LASEK (if you are not suitable for the surgical LASIK).
In both treatments, a cool beam advanced laser reshapes the cornea (the surface of your eye). Optical Express uses a technology called iDesign, which is based on Wavefront technology and takes thousands of eye measurements to produce the best results.
Lens Replacement
Optical Express has 20 years’ experience in lens replacement surgery. This surgery is a popular treatment for people with long distance vision, short distance vision, and even cataracts.
An eye consultant can help you decide which surgery best suits your needs:
- Refractive lens exchange (RLE) – This surgery replaces the natural lens with a synthetic intraocular lens (IOL) implant.
- Phakic IOL – This type of IOL is an alternative to laser eye surgery for patients with strong prescriptions.
- YAG laser treatment – YAG laser capsulotomy is a non-invasive procedure used to treat refractive former lens exchange patients whose vision starts to fade over the years.
Cataract Surgery
Optical Express performs the highest number of cataract surgeries – after the NHS, according to its website.
Cataracts are small, blurry patches on your eyes, giving you cloudy vision. Cataract surgery involves removing your damaged lens, and replacing it with a premium synthetic one for sharper near and distance vision.
Aftercare
Optical Express custom-fits its aftercare plan to every patient. This plan includes any medication that will aid the healing process, optometrist-led follow-up appointments, and an out-of-hours medical helpline.
Patients receive 12 months’ continued care as standard, and Optical Express recommends annual examinations to maintain your eye health.
Safety Record
All surgical procedures carry a degree of risk. However, laser eye surgery has an impressive success rate, and is the most popular elective surgery in the world.
99.2% of patients achieved at least 20|20 vision following surgery at Optical Express, based on a study of 190,231 Optical Express patients with the most common prescriptions. That’s why this eye clinic promises 20|20 vision or your money back.
Just be aware that the risks increase the more complicated the surgery. Optical Express will provide a screening service to check whether you are suitable for surgical treatment.
4. The Verdict

I was very disappointed with my consultation. I expected someone warm, reassuring and informative. What I got was a consultant who some might generously describe as straight-talking but who I regarded as brusque. There was much talk of the "mechanical" as opposed to the laser method of preparing the eye, which I found very off-putting. Within 10 minutes the consultant said that her 11 years of experience told her that I was not going to have the treatment and that I was wasting my time. I found the barrage of information about the alternative treatments very difficult to take in and, on leaving the consulting room, both I and my wife were uncertain as to the type of treatment recommended for me. We were then seen by another optician who presented me with an information pack which contained no details about either the type of treatment recommended for me or the prices. Both these had been supplied almost in passing by the previous consultant but I was amazed that we were being allowed to leave with neither a written price quotation nor details of treatment. On asking for both the optician proceeded to write down some prices on a piece of scrap paper and on another piece drew some scrappy diagrams in an attempt to explain in more detail the alternative treatments I had been offered. Neither of us was totally happy with the explanations provided and we left saying we would do more research on the internet in an attempt to make sense of what we had been told. Needless to say, I shall not be having laser eye surgery with Optical Express.

I had laser treatment on both eyes around 2 weeks ago. I was a little apprehensive prior to the procedure but the procedure itself was relatively quick and painless. I would recommend laser for anyone who finds wearing glasses/contact lenses a nuisance. Good luck!

Mr Manek Patel should not be a surgeon , he does not how to speak to speak to people and he comes across very rude and he did not reassure me in anyway, he is a total prat and should retite pretty soon Optical Express in Uxbridge , the staff and useless and standing doing alot of talking, when you come on the place no one greets you in a professional manner, instead you are given looks like you just slpet with their mother

I must say that six month after my surgery at Optical Express, my vision is excellent. I have 6/4 vision, no glare or halos during the night, so in one word perfect. I am very pleased with this vision correction method. Forget about spectacles and contact lenses and go for this surgery.

Hi, I have £150 money off teatment voucher if anyone is interested. I had laser eye surgery in April 2011 in the optical express Belfast clinic. I was a bit aprehensive after the 1st few visits and was very unclear of the treatment and price but after extensive internet reading I decided to go ahead. I was extremly nervous on the day of surgery but as soon as I met with my surgeon I felt completly at ease and any nerves I had dissapeared. The surgery was quick and completly painless and the team chatted to me the whole time. When I was told it was all over I could'nd believe it. It has been money well spent and would definatly reccommend it to anyone. Please email me if interested in the voucher and I will give you more details.jacqueline.mcgilligan@sky.com

I had laser eye surgery at Optical Express in the Birmingham Clinic in May 2011. It is the best investment I ever made. It has now been a month and I have 20/20 vision in both my eyes. My left eye took about a month to heal and now it has 20/20 vision just like my right eye. The surgery was completely painless, it was over in ten minutes, although my vision was hazy I could see better than what could with my glasses. After a good night's sleep the next day I had clear vision. I had no problems during and after surgery and I would recommend Optical Express to anyone thinking of going for laser eye surgery. My only regret is that I should have done it ages ago. I have £150 money off vouchers for Optical Express laser eye surgery, if anyone is interested or would like to ask me any questions about the surgery please email me on lotusflower_2007@yahoo.co.uk. Thank you.

So so so happy with my results - best investment I've ever made! Went for my initial consultation at the Cheapside Branch (central London) which was a bit shabby but the Optometrist was genuinely brilliant, he was very honest about risks and pain (he'd had it done) and offered up useful info that I hadn't seen despite my extensive internet reading! I was quoted £395 per eye (£790 total) but opted for the intralase on top (extra £600) as there is significantly less risks and healing time is quicker - however I used a money off voucher which I got from Ebay! Optical express were happy for me to use it even though i'd already paid my deposit and I only advised them of it 2 days before my surgery. I had dry eyes so was given free treatment to take for 2 weeks. I then had an interim appointment for dry eyes at St Albans branch which was very professional and then went for my Surgery at Harley street a week later with Surgeon Jan Ventor. He and all the staff were brilliant - I was very nervous and they were very patient (and allowed me to ask all sorts of daft questions). Surgery itself was over in 10mins - the pain after was not nice and you will need someone to escort you home - however I had my surgery at 3.40pm and by 7pm (after an hour sleep) I had no discomfort! my eyes are now able to read the lines that are 2 below 20/20 vision - like I said before it was probably the best thing I've ever done for myself!

I had my surgery at Optical Express Milton Keynes with surgeon, Saj Khan. It took me a few years to pluck up the courage and I was forever looking online and researching the procedure - sometimes scaring myself a lot in the process. All I can say, is that I am over the moon with the results - could not be happier and wish I had done it sooner! My consultation and follow up appointments were all through Optical Express in St Albans and they are very efficient. My surgery was at their Milton Keynes branch and the procedure day itself was nowhere near as scary as I had thought - think of it as a trip to the dentist. In fact, my wisdom tooth being pulled out whilst I was wide awake was worse a lot more gruesome - the laser eye surgery itself was fine as you cannot feel a thing. I had a few weeks of dry eyes and experienced the starbusts and halos at night, but that has now completely gone and am very happy!
