1. Optical Express Laser Eye Surgery Review

I’m very happy with my laser treatment. There’s nothing to worry about – there’s no pain, and I would recommend it to anybody. The aftercare at Optical Express is also very good. I just wish i had done it years ago. – Philip Lavelle

Optical Express uses world leading technology, and their laser platform – the VISX S4IR – delivers safe, accurate and precise results. Fun fact: Optical Express is the only vision correction provider to invest in the iFS150 intraLASE in each of its clinics – the same technology that led to NASA backing laser eye surgery for astronauts in 2007.

Over 99% of Optical Express patients achieved 20/20 vision or better following treatment, according to a study carried out in June 2017.

With over 25 years’ experience in eye care, Optical Express boasts excellent surgical outcomes, and has invested £400 million in technology to offer advanced methods for vision correction.

Optical Express has 128 clinics in the UK alone – far more than any other eye surgery provider. Its locations include London, Liverpool, Manchester, Leeds, Glasgow, Edinburgh, and Dublin, with many more situated in all corners of the country.

Laser Eye Surgery

Laser eye surgery is a simple procedure that can correct your vision in a matter of minutes. Optical Express offers the most popular types: LASIK and LASEK (if you are not suitable for the surgical LASIK).

In both treatments, a cool beam advanced laser reshapes the cornea (the surface of your eye). Optical Express uses a technology called iDesign, which is based on Wavefront technology and takes thousands of eye measurements to produce the best results.

Lens Replacement

Optical Express has 20 years’ experience in lens replacement surgery. This surgery is a popular treatment for people with long distance vision, short distance vision, and even cataracts.

An eye consultant can help you decide which surgery best suits your needs:

  • Refractive lens exchange (RLE) – This surgery replaces the natural lens with a synthetic intraocular lens (IOL) implant.
  • Phakic IOL – This type of IOL is an alternative to laser eye surgery for patients with strong prescriptions.
  • YAG laser treatment – YAG laser capsulotomy is a non-invasive procedure used to treat refractive former lens exchange patients whose vision starts to fade over the years.

Cataract Surgery

Optical Express performs the highest number of cataract surgeries – after the NHS, according to its website.

Cataracts are small, blurry patches on your eyes, giving you cloudy vision. Cataract surgery involves removing your damaged lens, and replacing it with a premium synthetic one for sharper near and distance vision.

Aftercare

Optical Express custom-fits its aftercare plan to every patient. This plan includes any medication that will aid the healing process, optometrist-led follow-up appointments, and an out-of-hours medical helpline.

Patients receive 12 months’ continued care as standard, and Optical Express recommends annual examinations to maintain your eye health.

Safety Record

All surgical procedures carry a degree of risk. However, laser eye surgery has an impressive success rate, and is the most popular elective surgery in the world.

99.2% of patients achieved at least 20|20 vision following surgery at Optical Express, based on a study of 190,231 Optical Express patients with the most common prescriptions. That’s why this eye clinic promises 20|20 vision or your money back.

Just be aware that the risks increase the more complicated the surgery. Optical Express will provide a screening service to check whether you are suitable for surgical treatment.

4. The Verdict

I had bilateral PRK at Milton Keynes on 13th October. I was really nervous going in, especially when I found out I couldn't have the sedative due to ashtma. When I went in for my surgery I was quite literally terrified! The staff were fantastic and literally held my hand all the way through. The laser lasted 27 seconds per eye and I really couldn't feel a thing. When the anasthetic wore off, I was in a great deal of pain (as I couldn't take sleeping tablets) for about six hours. The following day (Monday) all the pain had gone but my eyes were a bit blurry. On Tuesday the lenses felt a bit uncomfortable so I went to the Eye clinic. They were very surprised that the epitheleum had healed already!! and removed the bandage lenses. I haven't looked back since. My Left eye is perfect and my right is -0.2 (and improving every day). The staff and surgeon were excellant, as is the foillow-up care. I would say it is well worth it - even having been in pain - for the end result.

I have today been for my consultation and have been advised that it is not in my interest to have the procedure!! I feel extremely upset that I am not eligable for the procedure, but am very GRATEFUL for the honesty and sincerity of Maxivsion as to have had the treatment and not to have had the results which I would have expected would have been devastating. Top marks for Maxivison for their pre-op consulation!!! I have received excellent advice in my run -up to my consultation, I apparently have very thin corneas, my eyes are -3.75 and -4.75 (which in all of my investigation, I had not heard of?). I was so hopeful to being able to see without the aid of contact lemses and glasses that it had not in fact occurred to me that I would not be eligable for the procedure, and as you do was extremely exited at the prospect of being able to see without these aids!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! So even though today I feel devasted I just wanted to put a message on that Maxivision have my vote.

I recently had my consultation & surgery with Maxivision in Manchester and found the staff and service provided to be excellent. I was initially very worried about having this procedure carried out but the staff did everything and more to put me at ease, The optician spent over an hour answering my EXTENSIVE list of questions and never once seemed to tire of my exhaustive questioning. On the day of surgery I couldnt have been more nervous even though I felt that I had made the right choice I was still shaking like a leaf when I entered the clinic. The girls at the clinic gave me no choice but to relax, they chatted to me and kept me smiling it really really helped (If you ever read this girls thank you so much !!!! I couldnt have done it without you !!!) My sight is now much improved and I recommend the procedure to anyone who is found suitable!!! I have read the comments on this site and indeed spent many an hour looking through prior to my final decision and as far as I can see all companies have bad & good comments !! It seems as though you have to decide whats right for you but in my case Maxivision couldnt have performed better they were EXCELLENT.............. I will post on again in about 3 months to let you all know how my sight is developing.

01 Nov 2002

I had laser eye surgery with Maxivision in July this year and have achieved 2 lines better than 20/20 vision in both eyes. I cant tell you what a difference this has made to my life I see everything so clearly....Even at my consultation when I agreed to go ahead I never quite believed what a difference this would make.

01 Nov 2002

Have just had surgery 2 weeks ago and am amazed by my results so far!! througout the whole procedure I felt fine and although I never actually believed them about the no discomfort no pain thing its absolutely true no pain at all . I have told lots of people and would definetley recommend Maxivision or LASIK to anyone.

08 Nov 2002

My prescription was -6.5 in both eyes and after 20 years of contact lenses and glasses I decided to take up the scary option of laser correction. My initial doubts were put at ease by the consultant, he not only put me at ease but explained that even though my corneas were quite thin I would still be suitable for the treatment. I arrived at 9.50am, 10 minutes prior to my operation which started after a further check up. By 10.40 I was sitting in the waiting room following a post op check up and waiting on my taxi to go home. Once the anaesthetic wore off there was moderate discomfort but by 20.00pm the pain had subsided. The next morning was "brilliant", vision over distance was excellent, 3 days later all aspects short to long, were working fine. I'm now 0.00 in my right eye and 0.25 in my left "WHAT A RESULT !!!" I would not hesitate in recommending Maxivision to anyone interested...... Thank you for all your help and expertise. Brian

I thought everything was dealt with very professionally. Nothing was an effort, no fuss which instantly puts your mind at ease and relaxes you. I liked the fact that my husband was always kept informed and it gave him peace of mind (Secretly I think he liked all the attention) Barlow House was a calming place, very relaxed atmosphere. The staff were lovely people who couldn't have been more helpful. They should all be proud of themselves as they are an excellent team. I would recommend this treatment to people, yes it is a big step but the people at Maxivision make it so much better. It's unbelievable that in 15 mins your life can change. I'm absolutely thrilled!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Thank you so much.

I have would give top marks on everything for MaxiVision, This is not just due to the result of my treatment being so good but because even had the results not been as good I could never fault the service, treatment and friendliness or professionalism of your company and its associates. Keep up the excellent work & standards.

After a lot of searching on the web and asking around I decided to bite the bullet and book a consultation to see if I was a suitable candidate for LASIK surgery. I choose LaserVision because of the reputation of their world renowned surgeon Mr Williams, their informative website and extremely helpful staff. The lady who did my consultation tested my eyes thoroughly and told me about all the benefits and risks involved. After she established that I was a suitable candidate I spoke to Michelle the Practice Manager who gave me a detailed explanation of what would happen on the day and what to expect afterwards. I was very nervous but the professional staff and informative consultation allayed most of my fears. My prescription was -1.00 in my right eye and -1.50 in my left and I had my surgery done by Mr Williams on the 10th of July. It is now four months later and my vision is perfect, actually it is better than 20/20 now. I am absolutely thrilled with my result and I would recommend LaserVision to anyone considering laser eye surgery.

I had LASEK treatment on November 4th. I went to the London Clinic, and from the moment I arrived till the surgery - I was AMAZED at the WONDERFUL care and friendliness of the staff. Everyone made me feel so welcome, and I wasn't nervous at all. During surgery - I was talked gently through each part of the procedure, which only lasted MINUTES, and when I got up, I could SEE!!!! Apparently, vision is normally blurred after LASEK for 4-7 days afterwards, but mine was excellent - especially from my left eye. My surgeon was Susannah Boytha, MD, MRCOphth, and she was FABULOUS - SO easy to talk to - lovely smile when I first met her - put me at ease straight away. Follow up treatments (where I had my initial consultation and check up) at Evington Eye Care in Leicester SUPERB - again lovely staff, very reassuring. AFTER THE TREATMENT: Fairly uncomfortable for next two days - but drops eased discomfort immediately, till time for the next dose!! However, from day 3 onwards, discomfort not bad at all. You DO need a week off work - I was very tired and wouldn't have been up to being in bright or warm/dry environments. On my 4-day check up, I could almost read the bottom line unaided - which apparently is not normally the case - as LASEK vision still isn't at its best till a month after surgery (although by no means blurred). On day 14, I could read bottom line with both eyes, bottom line with left eye - but right eye still healing, just couldn't quite read bottom two lines (however, prior to surgery, couldn't read bottom line anyway with right eye (which was -5), with glasses on. So at one month - I'll let you know!!! But, my vision is well within driving limits, and is VERY clear now - only slight dry feeling in eyes which is normal for about up to a month after. Drops help this - I carry them around with me everywhere! Eyes look completely normal - no redness (only slightly pink on day of surgery!!!) WONDERFUL !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! WISH I'D DONE IT YEARS AGO - (Mind you, LASEK wasn't around then!!) In case you didn't know - LASEK is a 'no knife' operation, epithelium layer is pushed to one side, then the eye is lasered and the epithelium layer pushed back into place !! It was a procedure invented for people with corneas that are too thin for LASIK
