  7. The Verdict

1. Moorfields Private Eye Hospital

For patients who fail to meet NHS requirements, or for those looking for treatments left off NHS checklists (such as refractive surgery for the average glasses-wearer), Moorfields Private is a viable option.

Private laser eye treatments at Moorfields include the most common surgeries such as PRK, LASEK and LASIK, as well as specialist procedures for more complex conditions. Private patients also benefit from Wavefront guided surgeries, which tend to have higher success rates due to greater laser accuracy.

In addition to providing high quality treatment and aftercare, many patients like to know that the profits from Moorfields Private are used to fund the Moorfields Eye Charity, Friends of Moorfields, which supports critical new research and quality eye care for children and adults.

2. Moorfields Eye Hospital NHS Foundation Trust

If you happen to suffer from a select range of debilitating eye conditions that cannot be treated by contact lenses or glasses (such as cataracts or glaucoma), you may be one of the few people who qualify for laser eye surgery on the NHS.

Moorfields’ NHS Eye Hospital is there for these patients, but for the vast majority of us, Moorfields Private has its door open.

3. Moorfields Laser Eye Surgery Cost

While NHS treatment is free, at Moorfields Private prices will apply to all consultations and surgeries.

Laser eye surgery costs at Moorfields start at £2,000 per eye for common laser eye surgery such as LASIK or LASEK. These prices rise to between £3,000 and £4,000 per eye for more complex procedures including cataract surgery.

An initial consultation at Moorfields is around £150, and the private prices will depend on the eye surgeon you choose. That’s because the laser eye consultants are employed by Moorfields, and set their own fees.

Consultation costs

  • Consultation: £150 – £200

Patients considering laser eye surgery usually book one to two consultations prior to receiving treatment. You can book your first appointment on the Moorfields Private website.

Treatment costs (per eye)

  • LASIK or LASEK eye surgery: £2,000 – £2,500
  • Refractive lens exchange (RLE) or cataract surgery: £3,000 – £4,000
  • ICL implantation surgery: £3,000 – £4,000

Other costs

In addition to these costs, you may also need to consider covering your potential stay in the hospital for private treatment. Moorfields Private hospital fees tend to range from £900 to £1800, depending on the procedure.

However, recovery times vary, and many eye treatments allow you to leave following the surgery. Naturally, there are no hospital fees for NHS patients.

Other options?

Moorfields Private Hospital offers some of the latest laser and implantable contact lens treatments performed by world-class consultant eye specialists, and these prices reflect the clinic’s high standards.

Paying for treatment

Opting for laser eye surgery is a financial commitment for most people, and Moorfields offers three ways of paying for your treatment:

  • Private Medical Insurance – If you are covered by private healthcare, Moorfields asks that you try to verify these details before your first appointment, and obtain your pre-authorisation number.
  • Self pay – Many patients pay for their own treatment, with no private insurance needed.
  • Third party sponsorship – If a third party (such as your employer) has agreed to settled your account, make sure you acquire a letter of guarantee along with a deposit.

4. Laser Eye Surgery Treatments

Moorfields Private Eye Hospital provides over 100 vision correction treatments for adults and children of all ages.

Here are some of the most requested types of laser eye surgery treatments:

  • LASIK: The most common treatment to correct eye conditions such as nearsightedness, farsightedness and astigmatism.
  • LASEK: A surface laser treatment that is suitable for patients with thinner corneas (eye surfaces).
  • Cataract surgery: A refractive lens exchange (RLE), which is an option for those in the “reading glasses” age group.
  • ICL surgery: Implants that work like permanent contact lenses are common for younger people, or patients with medical dry eye conditions.

Moorfields Private Hospital usually performs laser sight correction surgery to both eyes on the same day, but with cataract surgery and ICL implantation, most surgeons prefer to leave a week between operating on each eye for their patients’ comfort.

5. Moorfields’ Top Surgeons

Moorfields Private and Moorfields Eye Hospital claim their ophthalmic surgeons and consultants are some of the best in Britain, and six Moorfields Private surgeons were recently named in the Daily Mail’s top doctors list.

Within the industry, Moorfields is also the go-to for ophthalmic expertise: a recent Moorfields report shows that over half of all registered ophthalmic surgeons in the UK received their training there. Not surprisingly, many Moorfields consultants also completed their training onsite.

Plus, based on hundreds of unfiltered reviews from former patients, Moorfields hosts some of the top-rated laser eye surgeons in the UK.

Here are the five best consultants at Moorfields, as voted by you:

  1. Mr David Gartry: As one of the first surgeons worldwide to perform laser eye surgery, they don’t come more experienced than Mr Gartry.
  2. Mr Julian Stevens: Mr Stevens is an advisor to the British Society for Refractive Surgery, and is recognised globally as an expert opinion leader in laser eye surgery.
  3. Mr Bruce Allan: Mr Allan had been the Service Director for Refractive Surgery at Moorfields since 2012.
  4. Ms Valerie Saw: Ms Saw’s interests lie in inflammation and scarring of the eye, and she regularly treats patients for dry eyes and conjunctivitis.
  5. Mr Alexander C. W. Ionides: Since 1989, Mr Ionides has specialised in cataract and refractive lens surgery for both long and short sighted conditions.

Bruce Allan and his team did an excellent job on my eyes. I felt confident in their abilities throughout. There was a thorough initial eye test and assessment including a meeting with Mr Allan where I was encouraged to ask any questions. On the day of surgery everything went very smoothly and during the actual procedure Mr Allan talked through what he was doing and what I should expect to see and feel which helped immensely. Recovery afterwards was amazingly quick. I went for a check up the following morning and then went to work. Puting the eye drops in for 4 weeks afterwards was a bit of a hassle, but well worth it for my now better than 20:20 vision eyes! I couldn't be more pleased!

Had look round the usual high street laser eye treatment opticians. All I can say is dont even bother with them, go straight to Moorfields!! Before I went to Moorfields I did have an appointment booked wih Ultralase, after being told by everyone at work to go to Moorfields I realised I had made the wrong choice, so cancelled my appointment with Ultralase. Whilst on the phone the lady who had called me to keep my appointment asked who I was going with, once I mentioned Moorfields she didt even bother trying to prevent me going with them, and even said if she was going to get the treatment that she would go with them too!! After that it was clear I had made the right choice. Went with Dr Bruce Allan and it was brilliant. Whole process went really well, few issues while in the operation theatre which caused one eye to become very bloodshot but made no difference what so ever to my vision. I now have better than 20/20 and eyes feel perfect. I dont even have issue with night driving, I am so happy with the results!! Go with Moorfields, seriously its a no brainer!! Its your eyes....dont mess around with them....the extra cost is nothing for the safety of your vision.

Since this site helped me with my choice in getting laser eye surgery I thought I would give my feedback from my experience in the hope it may helps others decide. I've just come back from my 3 month check after having Lasek on both eyes to correct -2.5 and -2.75 and I'm overjoyed with the results. While the Lasek procedure itself takes a little longer to heal than the Lasik procedure (I chose to go for Lasek over Lasik after doing my research) my eyesight is now excellent, better than 20/20 vision. For me, deciding to have the surgery at Moorefield's was the only option given their history and expertise in the field of ophthalmology, despite them being more expensive than most other laser clinics. I chose Dr Julian Stevens from past reviews and after reviewing his educational background and experience and history in the industry and I'm very happy I did so. Dr Stevens is very professional and thorough and I was made to feel at ease during the entire process. His staff are very efficient (particularly Janet on reception who even arranged for me to meet one of their patients who recently had Lasek a week earlier so I can ask questions and get more insight into what to expect). Overall I got the impression that Dr Stevens is the kind of surgeon that people go to see if/when things go wrong, and I also noticed that apart from a very busy waiting room which reflected the fact that his services were in high demand, there was a large number of trolley-cases accompanying those waiting, reflecting people traving to see him were coming from afar! I would recommend Dr Stevens without hesitation if you are planning on having laser surgery!

Thrilled with the results. Very professional team, I dealt mainly with Angelique and she was very helpful in terms of responding to information requests, making appointments,after-procedure support etc. Mr Allan inspires great confidence and I felt I was in very capable hands. I had been considering Laser corrective surgery for a long time and so by the time I'd made the decision to pick up the phone, (assuming I was deemed a suitable candidate) I was keen to proceed asap. I was fortunate in that when I called to arrange the initial consultation, I was also able to provisionally book in for the procedure so from first phone-call to seeing without lenses/glasses was less than a month in total and I was able to plan the appointments and the procedure/recovery afternoon around work, travel, family commitments.... The procedure itself was less than 20minutes and Mr Allan talked me through with as much detail as I wanted (not much!) After the follow-up appointment the next morning, I went straight to work. Just been for 3month check up and vision is perfect. I have no discomfort, no dry eyes - no negative effects whatsoever! Incredibly pleased with the results and wouldn't hesitate in recommending Mr.Allan and his team to friends. Its such a pleasure to not faff about with lenses anymore - really life changing!

My treatment was truly life-changing. As the weeks and months go on my sight is improving all the time. I only suffered from a 'haze-effect' or 'light-scatter' at night in the first few weeks after my treatment (which is normal) and now I have no problems. I don't even suffer from dry eyes, which as a contacts wearer before, was always an issue. Nothing can prepare you for that wonderful moment when you wake up the day after your surgery and you can see for the first time, without scrambling for your glasses. If you are considering surgery then I'm sure you've done a lot of research and I can wholeheartedly encourage you to go ahead with it. I was so nervous on the day of my surgery but Mr Allan put me at ease and calmly talked me through the whole procedure. He was fantastic. Now, three months on I have 20:20 vision and I'm still banging on to anyone who'll listen about how amazing it was to have laser eye surgery. If you follow the rules, and are religious about administering your drops after surgery you'll have a speedy recovery. I can't thanks Mr Allan enough.

02 Jul 2012

I'm very very happy with my eyes. Near perfect vision thanks to Professor David Gartry. I was very nervous of the whole procedure and anxious afterwards but trusted Mr Gartry and Moorfields. I had a few extra aftercare appointments afterwards and Mr Gartry saw me quickly with no problems or fuss. I had dry eyes for about 2 months afterwards. I would highly recommend him. It really has transformed my life.

01 Aug 2012

There is nothing more valuable than sight and to have mine brought to the level that others take for granted is amazing. I continue to recommend the clinic and a nephew has had equally successful treatment and I will continue to recommend to anyone who will listen!

12 Aug 2012

I had Lasek surgery about 7 months ago and it was the best decision I made. Mr Ionides was fantastic. I was very apprehensive about having surgery on my eyes but Mr Ionides soon put me at ease about the procedure. He answered all of my questions honestly and I came away from the consultation assured that I was doing the right thing. On the day of the surgery, I was so nervous to a point where I was almost panicking but Mr Ionides and his team were so reassuring and took such great care of me that I soon relaxed and I wasn’t worried because I knew I was in very good hands. I would highly recommend Mr Ionides and Moorfields Eye Hospital to anyone considering Laser Eye Surgery. It may be more expensive but paying that little extra gives you that reassurance that you are in safe hands and you are being taken good care of.

02 Oct 2012

I have worn glasses since I was 2 years old due to an inherited condition causing long sight, almost to + 5 in both eyes I never thought I would be a suitable candidate for laser surgery until I was pointed in the direction of Mr Gartry. I had the surgery in May 2012 and now have better than 20:20 vision thanks to the skill and expertise of my surgeon. I credit him with not only giving me my life back but also my confidence. Suddenly the world is a much clearer, sharper, more colourful place to be in. Even simple things like being able to read a newspaper or menu unaided feels like I have conquered the world! Thank you.

21 Oct 2012

Bruce Allan and team were exceptional. All aspects of treatment from initial consultation through to post procedure checks were conducted in the best possible manner. 4 months post procedure and I have perfect vision. I'm extremely pleased with the results. I could not recommend Mr Allan more highly. I normally don’t write reviews, but a few of my friends had similar procedures elsewhere (high street Opticians) and weren't entirely satisfied with the outcome. Moorfields is more expensive, but it’s definitely worth it.
