1. Review of Advanced Vision Care

Advanced Vision Care (AVC) is an independent surgeon-led clinic founded in 2003 by Mr Pillai on Harley Street, London. With no affiliation with any manufacturers, you should be able to count on treatment that’s best suited to your needs.

AVC’s Medical Director and lead surgeon, Mr Pillai, has nearly three decades of ophthalmic experience and is one of the few surgeons to have fellowships for both refractive laser surgery and cornea treatment. Patients even enjoy the benefit of speaking to Mr Pillai during the initial consultation, and can look forward to a stress-free aftercare plan, including any retreatment if necessary.

What makes AVC different? This clinic prides itself on being able to treat any eye prescription using a wide mix of treatments, meaning it may just be able to help you, even if other clinics have turned your down. Its patients also give this clinic the thumbs up, leaving hundreds of positive reviews on our site over the years.

  • AVC tailors treatments to its customers’ specific visual needs.
  • You can receive eye care from a small team of eye experts, each with 25 years of experience.
  • Laser and non-laser treatments sit under one roof, for customer convenience.

Is there anything else I should know? As you’d expect, cutting-edge eye surgery on Harley Street comes at a price, and this time it’s higher on average than you’ll find at some of the other top-rated eye clinics dotted around the UK. And unless you happen to live in central London, there may not be a clinic near you.

2. Treatments

Advanced Vision Care specialises in laser as well as non-laser vision correction treatments, including all the usual suspects: LASIK, LASEK, implantable contact lenses (ICL surgery), lens replacement surgery, cataract surgery and keratoconus treatment.

  • Advanced Wavefront LASIK / LASEK – Highly accurate laser surgery for those with thin eye surfaces or active lifestyles.
  • Phototherapeutic Keratectomy (PTK) – Therapy for treating long-term eye conditions.
  • Implantable Contact Lens (EVO Visian ICL) – Suitable for patients with complex eye prescriptions, thin corneas or dry eyes.
  • Lens Replacement (Refractive Lens Exchange) – Eye surgery for those over 40 with a reading prescription.
  • Cataract Surgery – Removes cloudy lenses, and replaces them with artificial clear ones.
  • Corneal Implants – Reshape irregular eye shapes to make contact lenses more comfortable.

As is standard with eye surgery clinics, all AVC treatments come with a 12 month aftercare package, which includes: regular check-ups, 24-hour eye expert support line, and post-op medication for the first month.

In the unlikely event that you require eye surgery enhancement, any laser fine tuning or YAG laser capsule thickening removal (following cataract treatment) is available at no extra cost.

3. Technology

Advanced Vision Care was the first clinic in the UK to house the complete Alcon Refractive Suite, which it claims is the safest non-laser technology in the country. It creates a personalised treatment plan that starts with a Verion Image Guided system in your first consultation, and continues throughout the surgery with devices that ensure superior visualisation.

The laser eye surgery treatment is also advanced. The femtosecond Intralase 5F Laser works blade-free by using pulses of harmless light to create a corneal flap, and the Bausch Teneo 317 Excimer Laser takes just 3 to 5 seconds to correct your vision.

What’s more, the highly accurate Advanced Wavefront technology is included in all laser treatments as standard, and an Eye Tracking System tracks eye movements, so you don’t need to worry about blinking during the procedure.

4. Advanced Vision Care Prices

AVC has some of the most reasonable payment options out there. It’s not the cheapest – high street clinics such as Optical Express and Ultralase take the crown for cost – but the free consultation, fixed prices, and flexible interest free finances all help their treatments work around you.

Is it worth paying more? Of course, that’s for you to decide. But to give you an idea of the prices, laser eye surgery at AVC costs £2,100 (per eye), compared to well-reviewed alternatives such as Optical Express and AccuVision which come in at around half that on average.

Are there finance options?

Yes, AVC has partnered with Hitachi Finance to offer flexible payment plans, meaning you can pay the full cost of eye surgery in bite-size monthly installments.

For example, you could pay for laser eye surgery in chunks of £66.67 a month for two years interest free, or £33.59 for 60 months at 9.9% APR. That’s generous – most clinics require 11% APR, and only the first year at 0% interest.

Does medical insurance cover the surgery costs at AVC?

Yes, AVC is an accredited provider of ophthalmic surgery for many of the UK’s leading insurance companies, including:

  • Allianz
  • AVIVA
  • AXA PPP
  • BUPA and BUPA International
  • Cigna
  • Simply Health

As always, you’ll need to confirm how you would like to pay before booking your surgery, both with your chosen clinic and your medical insurer.

great clinic

12 Jun 2005

The service was very good, especially Richard and Donna who explained everything very clearly, as I was really scared they made me feel at ease and comfortable as they assured me my eyes were in good hands. Mr Pillai was very good and understanding. I still suffer from the haze at present which I am very uncomfortable with but I now trust Mr Pillai and he has assured it will go.

The Staff at Advance VisionCare have been incredibly helpful, friendly & supportive throughout, even when I called up practically every day with a new question! My questions weere always answered fully even though staff have probably heard them a million times. They really understand what a big step for anyone & look after you through out very attentatively. (Plus now I can see & do not need to wear my glasses I am a new person, and also a much happier person.

I had a very high prescription and had been thinking of laser surgery for a while. After looking at my different options-I chose Advance Vision Care. Their service and staff were excellent. I always felt that I was in good hands and the results are life changing. I can see without glasses and contacts which I can’t remember since I needed then as a young child. I would recommend having laser eye surgery to anyone that asks me and Advance Vision Care’s service was impeccable.

20 May 2005

Having undertaken much research into Laser eye surgery & attended a consultation, I found Advance VisionCare by far tge most satisfactory option. For me it was important to see the surgeon at every stage of the process-for initial consultations and all aftercare treatment. This ensured a much more personalised approach and the recommendations made during initial consultation were from the surgeon who would be carrying out them out. I flet completely at ease with Mr Pillai and the nurses were also very helpful. I was able to contact Mr Pillai at any time to ask questions both before & after surgery. I woudd highly recommend Mr Pillai to those considering surgery. My vision is now excellent & having this surgery was the best thing I have ever done.

18 May 2005

My Optician recommended Mr Pillai when I enquired about laser treatment, as I have trusted my optician for years i knew I would be in good hands. The treatment was explained in great detail by his team & i felt completly at ease as I had astigmatism in both eyes I was advised that 20/20 vision may not be achived. However a week after treatment 20/20 vision has been achieved. I was so happy i nearlly cried. I thoroughly recommend Advance Visioncare, not only because they have improved my sight but because from start to end I felt safe. I was treated as a person not a number.

10 May 2005

Excellent service & aftercare consultation very thorough & individual I felt totally confident in my surgeon & knew I was in the best hands. I would recommend that anyone considering having eye surgery should use Advnace VisionCare

10 May 2005

This should of been the most tense experience of my life but thanks to the amazing team at Advance Visioncare I can honestly say that I was happy & relaxed from the moment I arrived & the time I Left. After my consultation It was found that my eyes would be more suited to LASEK instead of LASIK. A further hour or so was explaining this process from everey angle until I was completely happy & come the day of the procedure I knew exactly what was going on at all times. I still cannot believe how painless and trauma-free the procedure was, which I am sure is one of the biggest worries for everybody when deciding to have laser eye treatment. The treatment did include some slihghtly strange sensations but at all timnes somebody would be telling me exactly what was happening and what was about to happen next me. The procedure didn't seem to be taken very long at all which was probaly due to how much I was concentrating on what was going on around me but laso beacuse I was constantly re-assured so at no point felt alone. When the treament was finished the aftercare process was exsplained to me, then after taking a while to adjust I left the clinic to start what has been so far been a much better life. I would also like to say how impresed I was with the follow up appoitments I have at Eyesite Reading, it was clear to see what AVC entrusts them with aftercare for those of us who live outisde of London. Choosing to have laser eye treatment is a big decision and I reserached many clinics and surgeons before making my choice. All of my investigations led to AVC & I am so glad it did. Thanks very much to everyone at AVC for helping to improve my quality of life.

It has been nearly two months since my laser treatment and yet still every morning when I get up, I am amazed that I can see! It is such a quick and painless procedure. I can’t believe I’ve waited this long to have it done. Mr Pillai was so reassuringly calm from the first time I met him. He just put me at ease throughout my time at the clinic. He is a genius! I am getting married in Jamaica in October and for the first time I’ll be able to go swimming in the sea and not worry about getting my contact lenses wet!

29 Apr 2005

Although only 1 month post op, I have 20/20 distance vision and my short vision is now approaching pre-op levels. Apart from some admin issues, I am very happy with the treatment recieved and with the outcomes. I would happily recommend Mr Pillai and his team to anyone intrested in Laser treatment.

19 Apr 2005

Having worn contact lenses (gas perm) for 20 years I didn't feel I was getting the best vision from them-they were constantly clounding up & moving. Many consultants would not consider laser correction on my prescription. +5.50/-3.50 x 15 (r) +5.75/-3.50 x 172 (L) however Dr Pillai was ever confident. He gave me realistic expectation of how well he could improve my vision & throughout the consultation and treatment he took personnal interest in me. The correction was considered quite a challenge and whilst the surgery was quite uncomfortable it was for a short period of time & the results are fantastic-no need for lenses or glasses anymore. I have never looked back !!!!
